Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has taken the crown for best selling game in 2014 in the US according to games analyst NPD.

The statistics cover game sales in the US retail market. Behind Call of Duty in second place is Madden NFL 15 with Bungie’s opinion-dividing MMO shooter Destiny rolling into third place. Grand Theft Auto V manages to claim fourth place with indie darling Minecraft rounding out the top five.

The remaining entries in the top ten include Super Smash Bros, NBA 2K15, Watch Dogs, FIFA 15 and Advanced Warfare’s much less popular predecessor Call of Duty: Ghosts which sits in tenth place.

Over all of 2014, the games industry in the US alone was able to pull in $13.1bn in revenue, a year-on-year increase by 1 percent from 2013. This is attributed to a 20 percent increase in hardware sales to $5.07bn thanks to the Xbox One and Playstation 4 while sale of actual games reduced by 13 percent to $5.3bn.

Gaming accessories also increased by 5 percent to $2.73bn, a figure that is likely to continue to rise in the coming years with the increased popularity of lines like Nintendo’s Amiibo figures, which launched in 2014 and Disney Infinity’s figures, which saw a new wave of products released too.

The statistics released do show that the third major console in the market, the Wii U, continues to perform at a slower pace than its Microsoft and Sony rivals, but December 2014 proved to be the console’s biggest month in terms of units sold.
