N64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is receiving the 3DS re-release treatment.

Announcing the remake at Nintendo Direct, company president Satoru Iwata confirmed the remake would be released in spring of next year. The announcement was accompanied by an initial trailer.

Majora’s Mask was originally released in 2000 for the N64 and was a direct follow up to Ocarina of Time, using the same graphical style, system and world. The game is being reworked for the 3DS as opposed to having a straight-forward simple port.

’As we worked on the remake version, we set out to maintain the original level of challenge, while keeping the game accessible for anyone,’ said Iwata during the announcement. ’So we also focused on making sure the gameplay experience was as smooth as possible.’

The 3DS version of Majora’s Mask is following in the footsteps of predecessor Ocarina of Time once again, which saw a similar re-release for the 3DS back in 2011. The re-release has sold approximately 3.4 million copies worldwide to date.

The 3DS version of Ocarina of Time was notable for reworking some of the less popular elements of the game, including the notoriously frustrating water temple. Players can probably expect a similar treatment to be given to parts of Majora’s Mask.
