This DLC will be the first time the Mario Kart series has brought in characters from other Nintendo properties.
Mario Kart 8 is getting two downloadable content packs to add Link from the Legend of Zelda, the villager and Isabelle from Animal Crossing and a Blue Falcon kart styled like the racers in F-Zero.
The first pack is listed on Nintendo’s UK digital store-front as £7 and is due for release in November this year. The initial DLC will feature Link along with Mario’s infamous tanooki-suit and a cat-suit Peach, along with four new vehicles and eight new tracks.
The second pack which adds the Animal Crossing characters will be released in May 2015 and also includes a skeletal Bowser as well as another four vehicles and eight tracks.
The new tracks included in the DLCs will be a mixture of tracks featured in previous entries to the series as well as new courses, some of which will be set in the Zelda and Animal Crossing game worlds.
Buying or pre-ordering both packs will also get eight new colours for the Yoshi and Shy Guy characters.
Mario Kart 8 also recently announced a Mercedes-themed pack as free DLC for the game. This is available from today and adds three Mercedes cars as usable vehicles to the Kart racer.
Mario Kart 8 was released in May this year and received the ‘strongest review scores in franchise history’
according to Nintendo. It became the fastest selling Wii U game in the console’s lifespan so far selling 1.2m copies in its first four days of release.
The game also contributed to the Wii U itself shifting more units, with the UK seeing a 666% increase in the console’s sales shortly after the game’s release according to retail monitor Chart-Track.
