Warner Bros making Minecraft movie

Warner Bros making Minecraft movie

The Minecraft film will be a live-action production.

A film based on hugely successful creative and survival sandbox game Minecraft is currently in development with Warner Brothers.

Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson broke the news on Twitter and then confirmed the story with several outlets.

'Someone is trying to leak the fact that we're working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Move. I wanted to be the leak!' said Persson.

According to Deadline, the film will be live action and has Messick and Roy Lee attached as producers. Lee was recently a producer on The Lego Movie, which seems like a good fit considering the similarities between the two properties.

No further details on who is working on the film have been revealed at the moment.

At the beginning of this month, a Minecraft fan film that was trying to find its footing on Kickstarter was shut down by developer Mojang.

Released to the world in alpha form in 2009 with an official release in 2011, Minecraft has grown to be a gaming phenomenon and hit the 100 million registered users milestone earlier this week.

While this is the total of free accounts with Mojang, this filters down to 14 million copies on PC and Mac, 10 million Xbox 360 copies, 10 million Pocket Edition versions and 1 million of the most recently launched Playstation 3 version.

In the world of video game-to-film transitions, the Need for Speed film featuring Aaron Paul is scheduled to release next month.

'The Independent Guide to Minecraft' magbook features tips, tricks and strategies for both beginners and advanced users of Minecraft, covering all platforms, and is available now.

At the moment I'm struggling to find something about which I am less interested...

Quick! Lego Movie made so much cash! Find something that's roughly similar so we can make a cynical cash-in!

I think it'd be hilarious if the movie starts off all happy and peaceful with a simple miner gathering tools and building a little house for himself etc. then gradually descends into a survival horror film when Creepers arrive and the rest of the movie is the character frantically battling to stay alive.

Throw in some massive-scale elaborate creations that the character stumbles across (nod to the community designs) in the form of huge ruins or temples (sort of like the very very end of Dusk 'Til Dawn) the character attempts to hide in and it could be pretty epic...

I foresee digging, Java crashes and other bug related stuff, and mods. If it doesn't contain these, it's not a true minecraft film.

Oh and the inevitable digging down and falling into lava.

What really worries me is the "live action" tag...which to me sounds like it's just going to descend into yet another survival horror film (I'm not feeling as positive about this as ChaosDefinesOrder is)

When will Hollywood learn that just because it works on a PC or console, doesn't mean it'll work in a movie?

CLEARLY you're not a fan of the Mortal Kombat films either?

Surely nobody is a fan of them? The first one was okay and the characters at least looked right but the sequel? Urgh.

W-why...? I'm having a hard time imagining this. Surely it's going to be light-hearted and comedic, why not just animate it?
