Myst creators take to Kickstarter with Obduction

Obduction aims to recapture the feeling that Myst built of being in a new world to explore and figure out.

Myst creator Cyan has taken to Kickstarter to fund a new first-person adventure game.

According to the Kickstarter pitch, Obduction will have the spirit of Cyan's earlier puzzle adventure games Myst and Riven and, like these classic titles, will attempt to capture the feeling of finding yourself with a whole new world to explore.

The campaign is looking for $1.1 million, and has already raised over $230,000 with 29 days left to go.

Obduction will run on the Unreal Engine 4 and is being developed for Windows and Mac. It is aiming for a mid-to-late 2015 release. At present no stretch goals exist, but the team says if it does hit funding goals then they will work to make the game bigger and bring it to more platforms.

'We love the wonder of having an entirely new world at our fingertips. We love the twisted unravelling of an unexpected storyline. We love the satisfying "Aha! moment" of solving a particularly perplexing puzzle. We love the rush of revelation when we find out what's around the next corner. We love the twinge of emotion entering a dimly lit room because we feel like this place has become our world,' explained a Cyan spokesperson on the site, describing why they are launching a Kickstarter project.

Funds are going to be spent only on Obduction and Cyan has already assembled a team, some of which worked on the original Myst. Although they may increase the size of the team, Cyan is keen to keep the team size small.

Myst was originally released in 1993 and has over the years been ported to many different platforms. It held the record for the best selling PC game until this was beaten by EA's The Sims in 2002.

Cyan was responsible for Myst, Riven, Myst V: End of Ages and Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. Sequels Myst III: Exile and Myst IV: Revelation were developed by Presto Studios and Ubisoft respectively. In total, the Myst franchise has sold around 12 million copies worldwide.

myst was amazing, but i think people forget that riven was reviewed as "not as good as myst" and seen just as an ok sequel..

just another dev team that made a great game and could not make another like it and going on nostalgia to get money since most hear myst devs and think they going to get the same. IMHO

Cyan wanted $1,100,000 and achieved $1,321,306 plus PayPal pledges of $31,356 and the PayPal funding for 1.7m stretch goal is open until 28 February, the first stretch goal was achieved at $1,3M and is for Oculus Rift support which could be great but as I get motion sick in a car I'm in no real hurry to try it but I'm awaiting my Obduction T-shirt and boxed game :)
