The Last Guardian officially 'on hiatus'

The Last Guardian has been raising hopes among Team Ico fans since its announcement in 2009.

The long awaited and much delayed Team Ico project, The Last Guardian, has been officially declared as 'on hiatus'.

Originally announced for the Playstation 3 in 2009, the greatly anticipated game about a boy and his Griffon has been in an uncertain state of development ever since widespread speculation that it would be heading for the PS4.

In an interview with GameTrailers, Sony Computer and Entertainment of America president and chief executive Jack Tretton confirmed the project was on hold but added that 'projects never ultimately go away'.

Last Guardian creator Fumito Ueda has previously batted away questions about the game's release date stating that it is a decision that is completely up to the publisher.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Sony Computer and Entertainment of Europe president and chief executive Jim Ryan also supported the notion that The Last Guardian had not been cancelled outright, saying that if it had there would have been some form of announcement.

Sony has currently been enjoying an incredibly successful E3 with many industry pundits already declaring them and the PS4 as the 'winners' of the show thanks to their reluctance to follow Microsoft's strategy concerning used games and an often-on Internet connection for the Xbox One.

Many fans will be seeing this revelation about The Last Guardian as a missed opportunity for Sony to drive its victory home.

It's a shame when great projects get put on hold, but I guess it's for the better if the team are potentially looking to push it for the next generation.

I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

It's probably being transferred to the PS4. No doubt they ended up with a project that was too ambitious for the PS3, mandating a time-expensive switch to the next generation.
