Gamers plan digital sit-in for Half-Life 3 details

Over 30,000 gamers have pledged to play Half-Life 2 this weekend to convince Valve to pony up some details on the long-delayed sequel.

More than 30,000 gamers have pledged to play Half-Life 2 in an attempt to send a message to Valve: stop messing around and start dishing the details on the next game in the series.

Organising the effort through a Steam group dubbed A Call for Communication, the gamers will be taking to the streets of City 17 on Saturday en masse in the hopes that a show of solidarity will convince Valve it's time to part the curtain on the next Half-Life game.

Since its first release in 1998, the Half-Life series has been lauded for its clever set-pieces and surprisingly deep story for a game with a mute protagonist. Half-Life 2: Episode 2, the last game in the series and the second in Valve's episodic release schedule, came out in 2007. Sadly, there's been little from the company since.

While rumours point to a ditching of the planned Half-Life 2: Episode 3 in favour of a larger Half-Life 3 release, firm details are thin on the ground. So thin, in fact, that fans have simply had enough of waiting passively by for Valve.

'The lack of communication between Valve and the Half-Life community has been a frustrating experience. While continued support for current and future products is greatly appreciated, fans of the Half-Life series have waited years for a word on when the franchise will return,' the group explains in its open letter to the company.

'So, Instead of focusing efforts in a negative and disrespectful way, we have decided to gain Valve's attention by delivering a basic message: your oldest and longest running fanbase would like better communication.'

The group claims that it doesn't look to force Valve into rushing the development of the series, despite the original scheduled release of 2007 for Episode 3 having long since passed. Rather, it simply looks for acknowledgement that work on the series hasn't stopped. 'All that we ask for is a basic response on the matter, and to let fans know whether or not the Half-Life 2 story arc is scheduled to conclude at another point in time.'

To make the strength of feeling known, the group is asking its members to play Half-Life 2 on Saturday. By suddenly boosting the numbers playing the now somewhat dated title, it's hoped Valve will sit up and take notice. It's perfectly possible that the group will achieve its goal. With 33,587 members at the time of writing, its numbers are difficult to ignore.

Valve, for its part, has not yet commented on the group or its intentions.

Fancy taking part in a protest without leaving your chair, or do you think Valve will just ignore its fans? Share your thoughts over in the forums.

Why the hell have people gone and made a 'Call for Communication for Mirrors Edge 2', Valve aren't even involved in Mirrors Edge!

Ha ha, to try to get EA to make Mirrors Edge 2, people are going to do what? Play Mirrors Edge on Steam? High five internet.

I'd love to play HL2 on Saturday night but I'll be joining 999 other lunatics in doing a night run through chest deep mud and gunk.

True story.

Oh, and me doing my run will be just as effective at getting info on HL out of Valve as this fanboy stunt.

LMAO! How is playing an older game going to force that game's developer to produce another, when folk aren't really even sure what the next release will be called?

I guess I just don't understand the game market, being a non-gamer.

Well I am one of the 'old' dudes who bought HL, HL2 and EPS 1 and 2 and then Valve abandoned me and many others waiting in vain for over 5 years. We have been very patients with Valve like true fans do. But now I am over 40 and still waiting in the hope I live long enough untill Ep3 or HL3 or whatever Valve wants to name it.

Dear Valve just say what it is going to be damn it! So we can close the book and move on or that we did not wait so long for nothing.

HL3 is a guaranteed commercial success, why wouldnt you develop it - not like they stuck for cash?
If only they could make a few more dev teams and have a plethora of valve games all being worked on.

Have you even read the article?

Its not to force valve to make the next one, its simply to get them to tell us if they're going to make it/already making it.

Seeing as its been so long since Ep2, I'm sure they must be working on something, it'll just be nice to know for sure and what it might be.

Knowing valve they probably put an update out for HL2 before Saturday to put some hidden things in or something to tease us, like they did with Portal. :D
Eiffie 1st February 2012, 21:34 Quote
Seeing as how I never found all of the hidden Lambda Cache's of items in HL2 I could totally get behind this and give the game another play. Truly timeless games.

Mass Effect 3 might make a bit of a dent in that issue. On PC it looks to be Origin only and for everyone who has the first two on steam, gonna be a real kick in the nuts for some.

Lame. In what way does this put any pressure on Valve to divulge details about upcoming releases? When they are ready to announce something, they will. 30,000 people playing a game they released 7 years ago - yeah, way to him them where it hurts.

I have never understood whiney internet fans who jump up and down like screaming little children demanding things...I mean really! This is again a classic example of the maturity of gamers the world over.

Does anyone honestly belive Valve have abondoned the Half-Life universe, one of its major cash cows! I mean come on lets be serious, Valve haven't gotten this far in the business to be that stuipid. But yet everyone runs amok on forums like this as if they themselves are running corporate gaming companies, and of course as usual they know best!

I am a firm settler in the camp of "When its done, its done". Like Blizzard, Valve is truly one of the shining beacons in the PC game developement arena and if that means I have to wait fifteen yearsfor a sequel, I'll gladly do so if it stay true to the originals but still inovates. I mean God, imagine valve pumping out a Half Life every year the way Activision and Ubisoft whore their cash cows out.

No thanks, you can count me out. I love Half Life 2 like everyone else, its just there is far more important things in my life than getting my undies in a knot over whether Valve will release another Half Life game tomorrow.

And the sad state of affairs is its crazy fans like this that keep demanding releases only to get their new release, find out its **** and tear in appart on forums the next day.

Grow up guys!

ROFL. An ad campaign to... promote an eight-year-old game? Damn, if only I hadn't bought it eight years ago.

And I too am disappointed that I fell for this ploy by Valve to subject me to hours of torment and torture, playing one of the best games ever made. HOW will I cope? :'(

Very much doubt it.

Half Life has got to be valves biggest franchise, they wouldn't just leave it up in the air when there's such a huge fan base.

They've left it up in the air for years...

NethLyn 5th February 2012, 18:03 Quote
We can point and laugh at them but I can see where they are coming from, considering that there are regular updates and fixes for L4D2, a game they let wither and die and where you're only likely to get single player games anymore for campaigns as the servers are so few and far between if you don't want to play versus or download mods.

DOTA 2's clearly going to be first but they (the fans) can't keep saying "Maybe this November" every year ad infinitum. They just don't want the game to turn into Half-Life 3 Forever.
Fizzban 5th February 2012, 18:49 Quote

It'd be nice if Valve would, at least, drop hints. Not veiled uberlong hints like the Portal 2 buildup, but just an occasional hint. Maybe something cryptic relating to the new source engine, but absolutely nothing at all is annoying. At best. I know we don't have a right to this game, but I'd like to think that Valve has an Obligation to see this through to the end with the massive fanbase that it has garnered.
