Portal goes free on Steam

Portal goes free on Steam

Valve has released Portal for free on Steam until September 20th.

Valve has released Portal for free on Steam today, giving the award-winning puzzle game away for zero pennies on both PC and Mac.

The promotion is part of a Learn with Portals games education initiative which Valve is involved in.

'One of the biggest challenges in teaching science, technology, engineering, and math is capturing the students’ imaginations long enough for them to see all of the possibilities that lie ahead,' reads the blurb on the official site.

'Using interactive tools like the Portal series to draw them in makes physics, math, logic, spatial reasoning, probability, and problem-solving interesting, cool, and fun which gets us one step closer to our goal—engaged, thoughtful kids!'

Portal will remain free until September 20, 2011. You can download it here.

If anyone remotely interested in PC games hasn't managed to get hold of this yet, they need their head examined... I'm pretty sure that this isn't the first time Valve have put this up for free.

That said, if you haven't already got Portal then go and do it now! ...Then go get your head examined afterwards... :p

sweet,
my mum is finished with angry birds and she wanted me to get another puzzle type game for her. I think I will pop round my parents house tonight and install it.

Oooh. I missed this game. If it's all fro free, I think I'll partake of that.

.... and then I'm off to get my head examined... :)

Wonder if that's a cheesecake?

Awesomeness :)

Of course, any self repecting gamer probably has the orangebox anyway, or bought Portal during the summer Steam sale, when it was about £2 anyway. So they probably won't give away all that many copies, but get good advertising out of it, and might well sell more copies of Portal 2 afterwards.

It's me - I'm the only one who hasn't played this yet - downloading now...

Unfortunately no, that's no cheesecake. It's a Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte - or Black Forest Gateaux, if you're not being a nerd ;)... Apparently modelled on a cake being displayed in a cake shop near to the developer office. Yes, it is sad that I know that much detail about it. ;)

Does anyone still pay for Portal? I got my copy free from a friend who had it as a steam gift, most of my mates did it this way too!

Thanks for the heads up.

I downloaded it. I don't know why. I despised the "First Slice", whenever it first came out. I guess I just want to try it again. At least there isn't a disk and box to take up room in my trashcan.

Not everyone dislikes Steam. Sure, it has its flaws, but its practically the best thing PC gamers have got.

Portal is really quite a funny and clever game. Get to the point at which you can control both portals, and it gets FAR better.

How's this any different from what Valve did about a year and a half ago? Apart from the fact that this time the game's only free for 5 days instead of 12.

I'd say "Portal is free for a couple of days ...again" would have been a much more apt, if less catchy, headline.

When all is said and done it's still a great game, though...

Cool, I played Portal 2 but not 1, so this is another fricken time vampire I have to deal with

But at least it's a fun time vampire
longweight 17th September 2011, 11:02 Quote
It really isn't very long so it shouldn't take up too much of your time. :)

Wow. The only cake that's better than cheesecake (IMHO) and it's in the game I downloaded free today!

Pinch me. I'm dreaming!

In all seriousness, I'm really impressed with Portal. Really addictive and simple concept, but I have to say, I'm stuck already. Off to play DNF....

hmm they say it's free until the 20th - does that mean that if you install it, you can only play until the 20th? or that only during 15-20th it's possible to add it to your library?
tonyd223 19th September 2011, 10:42 Quote
Ok - spent some time on this - I don't get it.

I've just downloaded it and it seems a goodish game ( although every time I get something that even resembles a gun in a game I want to blast the hell out of everything that moves ).

BUT I was wondering the same thing as Kris, do we only have until the 20th to finish it or do we have as long as we want? anyone?

okay just checked the steam forum

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2128691

People ( not moderators though as far as I can see ) are saying you only need to add it to your steam library before the 20th. it's yours to own for ever after that.

which makes steam way cooler imo.

Just completed it - after 2 sessions. As everyone else has said, great game. Nice game to pick up and put down.

Thanks Steam for the freebie, and thanks Bit-Tech for telling me!
