Minecraft dev to become publisher

The next Minecraft/Braid/Frozen Synapse/insert-own-indie-favourite-here? Wait and see.

Minecraft developer Mojang has made the move into publishing with the announcement that it will publish action game Cobalt, made by indie development team Oxeye Game Studios.

In an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Mojang’s Carl Manneh explained that Mojang had always ‘intended to collaborate with other indie developers.

As RPS points out, the ties between Mojang and Oxeye are many – it was co-founded by Mojang’s Jens Bergensten and features music by Mattias Haggstrom, the musician behind Mojang’s Scrolls.

It’s no surprise that Oxeye fits Manneh’s ascertain that Mojang ‘wanted to find studios who have our philosophy of developing games, which is staying close to the community and treating it as a service’ to work with and publish for.

Cobalt looks to be an action platform game from the screenshots we’ve seen (not many, because we can’t load the links to Oxeye’s site at the moment), though the interview with RPS places heavy emphasis on the action part of the classification rather than the platform piece.

As another Oxeye co-founder, Daniel Brynoof, says ‘It plays not so much like a platformer, which I guess is strange. We have very few “platforming” challenges in the game. Instead we have focused on a very action oriented flow.

There’s no specific date on when Cobalt will be released or playable, though the current plan is to release it in the same way as Minecraft, with a purchasable alpha build.
