Sony announces new PSP

Sony has announced a new PSP model at GamesCom 2011, the PSP E-1000.

Sony has announced a new PSP model at GamesCom 2011 in Cologne today, the PSP E-1000.

Unveiled with minimal fanfare as part of Sony's pre-GamesCom 2011 press conference, the PSP E-1000 is capable of playing all existing PSP games, according to Sony, but lacks WiFi functionality.

That means that downloadable games will have to be purchased via the PlayStation Store using Media Go, then transferred.

The PSP E-1000 also has a matte charcoal finish, but what makes it stand out the most of the budget 99 Euro price tag, making it an undeniably cheap option for gamers on the go.

Few other details on the console have been released however, other than that Sony hopes to have the new PSP E-1000 on sale sometime this Autumn.

Sony also revealed that the company has sold more than 71 million units in the PSP line since launch.

I haven't played a handheld game since Golden Sun - are there any RPGs of that calibre on the PSP? If there are I would definitely be interested in this, if I could put films from my computer onto it too.

I really don't get it, does taking out the wireless really make it that much cheaper to produce?

Can't complain but it seems like a stop-gap solution to compete with the 3DS which can now be had for £115 in a lot of places.

Haven't used the wifi on mine once. Don't see a point in it, it won't work with any access points around here.

I'll stick to gaming on my phone when out and about, I've no need or desire for anything more these days. My original PSP and DS just ended up collecting dust after the initial novelty wore off.

Might work out as a cheap replacement for my PSP which refuses to charge from the mains (only way I can charge it at the moment is by plugging a USB multi charger into both the power jack and the USB mini data port on the PSP).

I actually used the WIFI quite often on my PSP1000. Especially PSP Internet radio, which had a HUGE selection of good trance stations.

Yes, it takes UMD discs (kinda has to really), which is re-assuring for those of you who
stockpiled UMD films 5 years ago hoping they'd be the next MiniDisc.

I think because they have learned Nintendo hard lesson: You NEED a good line up on launch. With Uncharted, Little big planet ect, they seem to be on the right track.

The 3DS launch was weak game wise, and I really believe that's why it's had such a slow start and will have to fight to come back. Ocarina of time was a stand out title for sure, but not enough to make me wanna buy a 3DS now let alone on launch. The Vitas line up for release and the months after has me saving hard for it's release day :)
