EA acquires Popcap Games

Electronic Arts has acquired Bejeweled and Bookworm creator Popcap Games.

Electronic Arts has acquired casual game creator Popcap Games in a deal worth up to 1.3 billion US dollars, the publisher has announced.

Popcap Games, known for casual titles such as Plants vs Zombies, Bejeweled Blitz and Bookworm Adventures, will recieve an initial $750 million USD, including $100 million in stock. That figure will be raised by $550 million in bonuses if sales targets continue to be met, however.

'As some of you may have heard, we recently announced that PopCap Games is being acquired by Electronic Arts, a small mom-and-pop boutique software publisher,' wrote PopCap in an official statement.

'What does this mean for the future? It's simple: 1, EA is being rebranded to Poptronic Arts; 2, Sim Zuma: The SwampLife Edition; 3, Peggle: Dead Space – Bjorn's Breakfast; 4, Bejeweled Battlefield Blitz; 5, Plants vs. ZombEAz: NFL Lockout Edition.'

More seriously the casual gaming giant said that, while it would now be able to draw on deeper resources, it wouldn't change focus from creating 'awesome casual games'.

Electronic Arts had previously bought out social gaming company Playfish too, in a deal worth $400 million USD.

It means plant vs zombies won't be available from steam in the near future. It'll be an Origin Exclusive.

"Plants vs. ZombEAz: NFL Lockout Edition" oh no! i hate those american football zombies.

well that sucks, Plants vs Zombie were an awesome game, hope they can keep up their casual games rather than create endless EA's mind numbing NFL or Dead Space rubbish.

Permit me a moment of cynicism, but I bet those sales targets that are talked about for the other $550 mil are unreasonably high...

That allows EA to do two things; not pay them more than a third what this deal is reported to cost, and second when sales targets are missed 'restructure' Popcap so that they obey more rigidly the instructions set out by EA.

Watch for news about Popcap staff being laid off en masse and forming a new dev house...

Not saying EA hasn't made some good games, but after what they did to Westwood Studios...

Oh god no!

I love Popcap; been playing games like Rocket Mania and Zuma for longer than I can remember...

Now I am yet to see EA do anything but suck the life and soul out of everything it touches, I hope Popcap survives.

Well, if all your gonna do is blast Ea, then go out the next day and buy a game published by them....Well, it doesn't add up does it?

Not in the slightest.

This has been rumoured for a while - from what I understand if it wasn't EA someone else would have done. Casual gaming is (as everyone knows) becoming huge, and all the big publishers want in. Popcap, being one of the biggest, were an obvious target.

I'm holding out on this one. True EA are big and greedy, but they've turned a bit of a corner recently when it comes to allowing developers a bit more free-scope on games and new projects.

Given how slick Popcap are, and how much of a hugely solid track record they have with churning out succesful games, I'd be amazed if EA tampered too much with them.

I imagine it'll be more of a ID Software/Bethesda relationship - EA publish the games, but leave 99% of the creative work to Popcap.

I never got into the Bejeweled series, just happy I've got both Peggles pre-takeover, although one of them was through Steam so we'll have to see if it will still work after this.

NethLyn, you should give Plants Vs Zombies a go, it's a really good game. You can try it free here in Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mmcegpfdgcoclcdfkjahiimlikdpnina

So sad to see EA just buying up great companies and turning them in to crap. It's been going on for a long time now and they have swallowed up some incredible companies and basically destroyed them. Sad to think that PopCap might end up the same way too. I have really enjoyed some of their games. Another one bites the dust..

If this changes popcap for the worse, I will destroy them.

Ill generate my rainbows, ill add more sparkles, then ill go all princess sparkles on their asses.

Well it will be interesting to see how Zynga react to this.
There are three major mobile gaming companies EA(Playfish), Popcap and Zynga, and Zynga is number 1 (with Farmville), and now after this purchase its EA vs Zynga.

It's created some real competition for Zynga and hopefully we will see some real competition between the two, with new and different games.

Bejeweled Battlefield Blitz sounds good too :D
wiby645 19th July 2011, 03:06 Quote
im not really concerned about the Ea takeover, or the Zynga Vs Ea comments. 1.3 billion dollars (austin powers style) 1.3billion dollars :O i know casual gaming makes alot of money from in game purchases.
but 1.3 billion
