World of Warplanes announced

Wargaming.net has announced a follow-up to World of Tanks, called World of Warplanes.

World of Tanks developer Wargaming.net has announced a follow-up to its wildly popular artillery MMO, called World of Warplanes. It's about planes.

Announced over the course of E3 2011, World of Warplanes will allow players access to planes spanning from the 1930s to the 1950s.

As was the case with World of Tanks, World of Warplanes will be a free to play MMO where players are divided into opposing teams and fight using authentic WW2 vehicles.

'We are proud to be able to develop another high quality Free to Play game for the world’s gaming community,' said Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi.

'World of Tanks has been extremely succesful and we look to bring the same high quality if not better to World of Warplanes.'

GENIUS!

maybe a futuristic one next with space ships, or even an older one with ships out at sea.

Aren't they likely to get into trouble with the name "World of Warplanes"? Blizzard might think it's a little close to WoW, over which they are fiercely protective.

wil it feature Joystick support?

Oh S***. My wife is so going to divorce me.

I already spend to much time on WoT.

Don't suggest a naval World of Ships. I spent too much time a few years ago on Navyfield, and an equivelent World of Ships would just destroy me and my marriage.

lol... There went my remaining spare time. I have been adicted to world of tanks, and if this gets out I am screwed...

On a more serious note, I think it could be fun, but the matches may have to be quite quick. Its not like you can just take your B-29 Superfortress and hide behind a house if shot at xD

Awesomeness

When I think about it, there might be a chance that the russian bear is going to be quite overpowered if the trend continues lol.

Looks awesome. Could it be a game where you have to bomb a target, and your fighters have to protect you?

Been there done that ;)

Remember that old Microsoft game you could access through their old, long-defunct online gaming service (think Heat.net). It featured huge multiplayer dogfights with WW2 planes.

Excited to see the concept return!

Does this mean they have finally fixed WoT? I [played the beta and was mightily frustrated by the viewing distance/camo/popup/shells disappearing into thin air bugs...

It's not just the acronym WoW, but the last word even beings with 'War'. If you try to suggest it to friends they will be rolling their eyes at you before you even get to 'planes' :P

And also a bit crap.

How are they going to fit all the flight controls into WASD+ Mouse?
The reason so many flight sims have small communities is because you need to have a Joystick and pedals in order to get the most out of them

+1 to the guy who suggested World of Warships that would be EPIC, Like world of tanks now but BIGGER EVERYTHING

That would be interesting if you could get up to the large flag ship battleships. Unfortunately WWII era naval combat was very long distance, non littoral combat. You had the small cruiser spot the enemies and the big battleships try to dial in their main guns. Aircraft carriers and radar changed everything. WWII was the first time a battle was fought directly from radar.

And what would be the Tier 10 Artillery for Japan, The Super Yamato Class? :D

Hang on, isn't this an idea.

Maybe they're waiting till they release world of warplanes and maybe just maybe, world of warships before they release a final game where, wait for it, they release all of them in the same package? God, brainwaves.

World of War?

Tanks+Planes+Ships!
azazel1024 8th June 2011, 19:12 Quote
World of Warships could be based around WWI stuff instead of WWII. Just a thought. Those engagements were fought at much closer ranges. Besides, they don't necessarily need to go for ultimate realism of actual battle distances. Can throw in plenty of littorial maps, or littorial esque. IE battle among some of the Pacific Islands, or among the Mediterranian islands or the Balkan islands, etc. That way you have islands acting as some amount of cover. You could come up with a system for BLOS combat. As you mentioned smaller ships acting primarily as spotters for the larger ships.

Could work it a bit like SPGs now where the bigger ships have a top down mode for targetting their guns and smaller ships it is LOS targetting or everything could be top down gunnery.

Anyway, I digress, really looking forward to World of Warplanes. I hope they have dual controls so you can do keyboard and mouse or joystick. It almost makes me want me to see a setup where there is a bomber or three and each one is piloted by a player, and each turret has a player as a gunner and finally a few fighters as escort. Enemy is composed solely of fighters, or maybe the other team has the exact same composition and it is bomb the enemy's factories first OR eliminate the enemy.

Probably just going to be all fighters and dogfighting though, but could still be pretty cool. Especially if they design the maps so you can get low and slow, like through mountains, cities, etc with vertical obsticals.

World of Broadsides?

Now that sounds like a hell of a game. Although it probably wouldn't be that intense. Or would it?
Xir 9th June 2011, 13:14 Quote
They'l probably leave out joysticks...at least in Battlefield and BF-Vietnam if you had players with mouse+KB and players with joyticks in the same game, the joysticks ruled supreme :D

Then again, almost everybody has a controller at home anyway, and that has anaolgue sticks (which is essentially a joystick) Hmmmm.

Also, you don't really need footpedals with a joystick as you use the "rotation" of the joystick for the rudder (which i real planes you don't).
Works excellent.

(Rotation, beeing the twist-of-the-wrist that steers the upper body in Mechwarrior)...speaking of mechwarrior, how about World-of-Mechwarrior? :D
Supereasy, just World of Tanks with new vehicles
