Paramount announces new Star Trek game

Paramount's new Star Trek game will be developed by Digital Extremes as a co-op shooter.

Paramount has announced it is working on a new game based on the Star Trek franchise, with Unreal co-developer Digital Extremes set to create the game set in the restarted universe of the new films.

The new game, which is currently untitled, won't be based on JJ Abrams' new Star Trek films, but will explore the same universe and characters. The story will focus on an alien race and it's attempts to conquer the galaxy

The game is described as a 'co-operative action-adventure', with players taking the role of both Kirk and Spock as they attempt to fend off these alien invaders. Popular rumour suggests that the baddies in question will be the Klingons, but neither Paramount or Digital Extremes has confirmed this.

The title is currently penned for a Summer 2012 release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, meaning it will likely be released to time in with JJ Abrams' next film, which is also set for a 2012 release at the moment.

The last Star Trek game to see a major release was Atari's Star Trek Online, which failed to wow us when it first hit shelves.

You speak the impossible!

Seriously though, theres as much chance of this being a decent star trek game as there is of the average person on bit-tech knowing who Steve Brookstein is.

I enjoyed the later section of BOTF especially when you defiants and they just run amok.

An Original series Star Trek FPS?
I have a feeling it will be poo, the original series just doesn't lend it's self to the fps style in the same way Next Gen does, there's a distinct lack of different weapons and tools in the original series compared to Next generation or any of the other recent ones.

Ah but this is based on the alternate reality TOS where tech advanced much quicker than the prime universe.

The article states its using the Rebooted universe created by the latest Star Trek film. ;)

9 defiants on intercept = LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. It's such a shame the game is so unstable and laggy the longer you play, I would love to get a proper 5 player game going.

Seriously though, sounded ok, but I saw the words "Unreal co-developer" and my heart sank.

I know who Steve Brookstein is so this game now has a higher chance of achieving "good" status. Then again there is noting average about me.;)
