Minecraft announced for iPhone and iPad

Mojang Productions has confirmed that it is working on a version of Minecraft for iOS devices.

Indie developer Mojang Productions has confirmed that it is now working to build a mobile version of Minecraft for Apple iOS devices, namely the iPhone and iPad.

Planned for release later this year, the mobile version of Minecraft is currently being built by one Mojang employee - Aron Neiminen.

According to Gamasutra, the mobile version of Minecraft may not be as full featured as the PC versions. Mojang may cull some features back in order to make Minecraft playable on iPhone and iPad devices, though it hasn't given specifics just yet.

Minecraft is a directionless block-building sandbox game where players work to create houses and castles to hold off zombies. It's really rather good, despite what some members of the Bit-Gamer team may think - and has proven very popular with the Bit-Gamer community.

How popular has Minecraft been? Well, it's sold over 1.3 million copies and it's not even come out of beta yet. It's also spawned a plethora of iPhone clones already, such as Eden: World Builder.

that picture somehow feels to me too good to be true. Maybe its the small size but it looks like HDR is on or something.

To clarify, that's a random Minecraft mapping picture - not of the iPhone version. No pictures of that, yet.

My interest in Minecraft is starting to peak to the point I might actually get it.

I know they said if you got the game in alpha you would get all updates... does that include access to the new iphone version as well though?

will you be able to connect to the same online servers as on the pc or would it be single player only?

It was from another dev team, and was pulled off from the shelf due to copyright reasons.

Not really "announced" it as such, more "yeah we're working on it"... There's a pretty big difference...

That would preclude Apple from taking their cut. And if Apple doesn't get their cut, Apple gets angry.

Not so. Otherwise Apple would not allow free apps on their App Store. Or free upgrades of apps already purchased.

I don't really think minecraft is suited for the iphone, i mean, it can take hours of hard work just on the pc to build a decent sized cavern or so (and by decent i mean about 100*100 blocks), so just imagine tryin to build anything that size on the iphone. The ipad sure, it's screen is actually pretty big and can prob handle the game, but the smaller apple products, not so much. I think it will prob just be made for Ipad and the iphone might just have a viewer or something. Either way minecraft rocks. Over 10 hours just building a tunnel and it reached all the way through 4 lava pools, graphite, limestone, dirt, stone, and a bunch of other stuff :D. Minecraft has to be the most addicting game ever!!!

Also take a look at this awesome iPhone game similar to minecraft in a way but 2D, with Quests and other cool tidbits:

^^^ I like. It has a wonderful retro feel about it, and the 2D format lends itself nicely for a small screen.
