Duke Nukem Forever release date announced

Duke Nukem Forever release date announced

Duke Nukem Forever is now confirmed for a May 3rd 2011 release after 13 years of development.

Duke Nukem Forever has been given an official release by publisher 2K Games after almost 13 years in development.

The long-awaited shooter has now had the release date shifted from 'When It's Done' to May 3rd in the US, May 6th globally. It will be available for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Duke Nukem Forever has had a famously turbulent development, with 3D Realms refusing to give firm release dates and repeatedly restarting work on the game from scratch. Ultimately, after financial troubles set in, Borderlands developer Gearbox Software was put in charge of finishing the game off.

Confirmation comes from Gearbox's Randy Pitchford, who revealed the date to Game Informer. There's a new trailer too, which you can view below.

You can check out our Duke Nukem Forever hands-on preview for more information on the game, plus don't forget to let us know your thoughts in the forums.

*drool* back to black for FPS. Hopefully none of this multiplayer centric "realistic" shite of recent, I want a proper gorefest and "half baked" story line with multiplayer as an after thought. After all the Duke doesn't need friends!

It must be said, those graphics look terrible.

All the same, I want :)

Anyone else think his voice sounds a little weird?! I do hope those vehicle parts weren't just thrown in for the sake of it style things.

The habitual cynic in me wants to talk about how lame this is going to be but that trailer made me laugh with glee and remember how much fun I had with DN3D.
Did they... did they actually manage to get it right? Did they capture the fun of Duke? Can this be real?

We might finally find out in May..

I couldnt give a flying Fword about this game its going to suck badly and after this useless release the duke nukem character should be forever forgotten.

Mature Humor - check (damn they need to learn how to spell)

Strong Sexual Content - check
Use of Drugs and Alcohol - check

What's not to like?
kylesaisgone 21st January 2011, 17:57 Quote
Hopefully they didn't chicken out on the sexual content because of the ESRB/PEGI, because afterall, this game will be on the console platform, so that automatically means it will be dumbed down.

Well buggered me that didn't look effing awesome. I've always had a soft spot for Duke, and if this isn't all the good bits in one go then it looks to be excellent. And surprisingly similar to the old 2001 trailer that still today looks frankly amazing. B... B... B... B... B... B.. BALLS OF STEEL!
Darkefire 21st January 2011, 20:19 Quote
I'll admit it, I was skeptical, but that trailer was ten kinds of awesome. I'm sold. Borderlands was great until it got repetitive, hope Gearbox did some good work here.

The end of the trailer was sickeningly puerile. It's that sort of thing that gives gamers the reputation they have among wider society. If it had been humorous in some way would've been something but that was just pathetic.

This could be the greatest game in the history of mankind... and it would still be a failure. Because NO GAME can live up to 13 YEARS of hype.

And what if it is the greatest game of all time... but the time to beat it is only 10, 20 or even 50 hours. It still would not have been worth the wait. Unless there is some ridiculous amount of replayability that makes it more replayable than all the subscription MMO's put together.

Yup. Replayed the GOG release just a month or two again (if by the 'original game' you mean Duke Nukem 3D and not any of the other ones). I really liked it and Shadow Warrior too. But this seems so try-hard.

This. This in spades. I had a massive grin just watching the trailer. I'll be playing just for the (ironic) lols. Games need more lols.

I mean, you know it's not going to have the hottest graphics etc - it's a multiplatform title having to run on 5 year old Xbox and PS3 hardware. The title has been 13 years in the wait but the developer has only had it for 2 years by the time it comes out, so they won't have made the PC version separately, it'll be one code-base. Content > graphics. Duke has always been a very standard FPS, at least they are staying true to his core but adding the fun (I hope). I can live with that.

Point is anyone who was around to see/play the first one will want this... after just seeing the trailer and feeling the nostalgia of Duke 3d, I know I do :)

PS: It don't look great, it looks okay, but this release is not about how good it looks - it's all about THE DUKE returning

They will. The uncut.version of the trailer was shown a lot at trade shows, this is just so they can show the trailer to the wider Internet.

Yea the graphics don't seem all that much but who needs it when you get to laugh hard and have a good time.

As for the voice it does sound a bit different, should be a bit deeper.

This game looks crazy - some of the content will be familiar to most FPS fans. I know there have been problems with the developers over this game since 1997. It seems like a forgotten memory. I dont think it will be a Crysis 2 beater or Crysis for that matter, but needless to say the games added dimension and crazy kick ass action will be nostalgic for gamers in their 30's. Young gamers will not know what Duke Nukem is about so it wont be that appealing to them. They will compare it to other FPS games that are comming out this year and also the well established...........Now when will valve release Half Life 2 Episode 3 - they must be working on a new engine!
LightningPete 24th January 2011, 23:44 Quote
For some reason I think many of you guys will be dissapointed in this game... It has a major hype behind it, but can it really deliver? Will it be another call of duty based franchise with 11 pubescent kids screaming in your ears till they bleed, and can you just point and spray until everything both moving and inert just dies around you?

I like this necro, I missed my chance to post here first time round.

People crying about how bad this game is going to be have missed the point. Missed it by such a long, long way. So have those saying it will be fantastic. Most totally missing the point is mute1's complaint that the game is offensive and puerile.

Here's the lowdown: DNF will be terrible. It will be cheesy, brainless, juvenile, sexist and offensive, and deliberately so. That's the point - it's a throwback, a self-conscious nod to the stupid and simple games of the 90s. To quote:
