Mass Effect 3 announced

Mass Effect 3 will see the Reapers attacking earth head-on in an all-out assault.

Electronic Arts and Bioware have officially announced Mass Effect 3, confirming information that slipped out in an EA Store update over the weekend.

The Mass Effect series was originally planned as a trilogy, but it remains to be seen if this will be the last game in the series or whether Bioware will seek to expand the franchise further. One thing is for sure; Commander Shepherd will return for the third game in the series.

'Earth is burning,' reads the official synopsis, 'Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race.'

'As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.'

Mass Effect 3 will be released on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in time for a Christmas 2011 release window, meaning this will be the first Mass Effect game to launch on PS3 and Xbox 360 at the same time. The PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 is due out January 2011.

Reapers, dudes. Reapers. Not reavers.

I know Firefly is awesome but you've got your awesome scifi franchises all mixed up. :p

Yep, I'll buy this one the day it comes out, the only other game I'd do this with is HL2 Ep3 (still waiting...)

I'm confused about timing. It says there is a three platform release for Christmas 2011, but that the PS3 version is due January 2011.
So which is it, December 2011 or January 2011?

ME2 will be out for the PS3 in January 2011. They had to wait this long to get it (or play it on a "competing platform" :)).

Ahhh! Reading fail!
My eyes just skipped past the "2" and my brain inserted a "3". I can't believe I read that several times without picking up my error.
Thanks.

A year's not too bad. Fingers crossed it's as good as the other two.

I really loved ME1, not so much the ending of ME2. I'm not sure I will buy ME3 if that giant human looking mega robot comes back and attacks earth though...

So many games in 2011, this one is low on my list to be honest, very dissappointed in this series after all the hype.

Christ I still haven't played ME2. Will have to keep my eyes open in case it shows up in the inevitable Christmas sale on Steam :)

To say I'm looking forward to this game, would be a massive understatement.

They've actually got the London Eye + Big Ben orientation right as well! Although I couldn't see the Thames and waterloo bridge..

Same as. Loved the 1st but never really got around to playing the 2nd this year. At least I now know I've got a year to play it.

Bring on the steam sales!

Do you think they accept pre-orders a year in advance?

Go check a website that sells games and see if they are taking preorders. Plenty do it well ahead of time. Personally I would wait until they announce the different editions and then preorder the one I liked the most. Which I already know will be the collectors edition for me.

I imagine this is the last of the Reaper story arc. Just looking into the near past of Mass Effects back stories, there are several instances of races rising to power and threatening the universe.
