Michael Jackson removed from Plants vs. Zombies

Michael Jackson removed from Plants vs. Zombies

An enemy inspired by Michael Jackson's Thriller has been removed from Popcap's Plants vs. Zombies.

Popcap has removed an enemy based on Michael Jackson from the popular Plants vs. Zombies after receiving complaints about the character.

While the enemy, who resembles the now deceased singer, was based on the Thriller music video, Popcap decided to remove it after the singer's estate got in touch.

"The Estate of Michael Jackson objected to our use of the 'dancing zombie' in Plants vs. Zombies based on its view that the zombie too closely resembled Michael Jackson," PopCap told MTV.

"After receiving this objection, PopCap made a business decision to retire the original 'dancing zombie' and replace it with a different 'dancing zombie' character for future builds of Plants vs. Zombies on all platforms. The phase-out and replacement process is underway."

The singer-inspired zombie originally appeared as a special zombie who, during night levels, would do a dance that summoned hordes of extra zombies.

The original Plants vs. Zombies, which has players repelling waves of zombies with the aid of peashooters and mutant plants, was released on PC two months before Jackson died. It has since been ported to iPhone and an XBLA version is currently in the works.

I liked the MJ guy spawning more, sad they are removing him.

I'm sure someone will mod him back in. To be honest, I don't see it as an insult to MJ, but more of an ode. Everyone recognises the costume and the dance moves.

It's a shame the Jackson family can't understand that it wasn't done to take the piss, but as more of a tribute to the Thriller video which included zombies and fits perfectly with the games design and ethos.

I'm sure this has less to do with respect for the late Mr Jackson, and more to do with grabbing for royalties.

Kudos to popcap for dodging this one.

Well, I shall hold onto my original copy of PvZ now - I loved the "Dancing Zombie" :D

It even came with a disclaimer in the Almanac: "Any resemblance to any person living or dead is purely coincidental"

pah, jackson family only has "issues" because they aren't profiting from it.
Give it a decade or 2 and bet they'll be auctioning off pieces of his skeleton.
A first move on there part to licence the image of MJ and profit from it any way possible. They should of just shaded the dancing zombie black then it def wouldn't be the known image of MJ.

It's been out for ages, what took them so damn long to complain about it.

They couldn't complain until he was dead. Only now can they squeeze for cash.

The Jackson family should take it further and copyright the initials 'MJ'. That way they can sue Michael Jordan lol...

Losers.

I don't think they would loose a law battle because of that one. Because the character was "inspired" no copied. Perhaps they wish to avoid the headache. As for me, I think the jackson family could suck on a potato! Popcap should keep the character.

BTW thats a GREAT game!

All of them are millionaires and they still won't give a break to an indie studio. That's sad

If I were them I wouldn't even bother. Not because I wouldn't want the money but because I wouldn't bother contacting my layer for something so insignificant

Just bought a retail copy, as I don't wanna lose that zombie, and could become collectable....(£4.99 game.co.uk)

I've now set my steam edition to not auto-update and made the files read only.
