Valve releasing free game today

Valve is releasing an updated version of Alien Swarm, plus source code, for free later today.

Valve is to release an updated version of the old Unreal Tournament mod, Alien Swarm, for free later today - along with the full source code.

Alien Swarm has been remade in Valve's Source engine and will include full Steam support, with cloud storage, Steamworks tools and community support. The game itself is a top-down, co-op focused shooter about blowing up aliens - check the trailer below for more info.

The release of Alien Swarm has come about after Valve hired the team behind the original UT mod, Black Cat. Since their acquisition in 2008 Black Cat has worked on Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal, but has continued working on Alien Swarm too.

"If you’ve ever thought about developing a mod on the Source engine with Steamworks, this release provides more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production," said a Valve spokesperson in the official announcement.

The game is set to be made available at around 9PM GMT tonight, but you can check the trailer below for a quick taster of what's to come in the meantime.

Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

It's nice to know that Steam are still supporting their fanbase and their older games :)

It is fairly generous of Valve to be doing this, at the very least they could have asked £4.99 and likely sold a bundle, then reduced over a sale, and eventually free ... plus the SDK for it? God love 'em!

No bloodey wonder they never get any work done... does anybody there actually remember they were supposed to be making episode 3?
tennisball 19th July 2010, 12:15 Quote
Well, it's not even the Half Life team, it's some of the dev who worked of L4D, so it's not really slowing Episode 3 down, nor is Portal 2.

although I can't wait for it, I wish people would stop complaining about Episode 3, it'll come when it's ready.

Half Life - 1998
6 year gap - raised the bar so far they brought the roof down
Half Life 2 - Nov 2004
1 year and 6 months later ...
Half Life 2: EP1 - Jun 2006
1 year and 4 months later ...
Half Life 2: EP2 - Oct 2007
so far the wait has been 2 years 9 months ... expecting them to raise the bar again?

I am.

We sell Mac and OSX gear. ;)

As a piece of build quality it is better than any laptop available by any other manufacturer in my humble opinion.

Expensive, but for me and what I use my PC for it was a justified purchase.

Would I recommend one to any of my friends, no. Would I buy another one for myself in a couple of years - certainty.

This is the reason why I love Valve!!!!!! Quality, Support, innovation, they listen to gamers, and they give back to the gaming community, FREE GAMES. There's Valve ------then there's everybody else. I can't wait to play this tonight.

To all those complaining about Episode 3 taking forever, Just remember it will be released when all gaming hope is lost, during our darkest hour, when we are on the brink of extinction, Episode 3 will return like Jesus Christ himself and save us. So just wait as perfection can't be rushed.

However, failure can creep up on you. Episode 3 is very low on the list of things to look out for. I'll play it when it comes out but I won't be bouncing up and down on the chair like a housebroken puppy awaiting the go code.

Negativity aside, I've been waiting for this bunny since I first played Shadowgrounds, it's always been the desired result. As a freebie? Oh hell YEAH! Have spacesuit, will travel (the bigass guns are a bonus!) Now where exactly do I donate to someone for this fine piece of work?

This is pretty much how I stand on Mac laptops. I love them, and am willing to pay over the odds for it. My used and abused 2007 Macbook pro is still serving me well (albeit on my 2nd powerpack...). I'd never have a desktop Mac, but will probably always stick with their laptops. One more USB port would have been nice, admittedly.

I will courteously refrain from hunting you down and plucking out your eyeballs. A nominal 2 MB connection here and download speeds varying between 3 kb/s and 60 kb/ps.

I'll be online sometime around Wednesday and up for a game or few. Steam tag is the same as the forum tag and if you mention Bit Tech I promise not to ignore you.

So, the same answer as the Black Mesa development team.

The last I heard they were saying an end of 2009 release.
Has anyone had any update on the ETA for this perennial "Mod of the Year"?? Their site offers no clues. No Tweets (twits??) for 7 months is a bad sign.
leexgx 20th July 2010, 15:19 Quote
if its still bad use the France server and keep bringing up the play window and pressing close until it does 300KB/s wait 15 secs between trys (do not close the Play box once it is going as it stay locked onto that server until it finishes)

every time the play box is up it switches download servers for the selected country so pot luck you hit an free download server

Steam really should think of using bit torrent to combine all the servers into an massive webseeds as they do have over 200 download servers and the clients them selfs could be apart of an swarm Only when downloading so if you are downloading your uploading and downloading once Finished uploading stops
(look at what Twitter did)
steveo_mcg 20th July 2010, 15:21 Quote
Yeah i like the idea of being able to just download from the swarm of Steam servers though I wouldn't be enamoured with the idea of sharing with the upload purely becuase my isp gives me a pathetic upload rate.

Which I would promptly block from allowing to upload from my connection. It's my line, it runs on MY rules. I don't want to give you an upload on my machine if it's not something I want to do. Steam would lose thousands and thousands of subscribers if they did that due to download/upload caps.

This. If I buy a game on download I expect to be able to download it, and at a reasonably fast speed, without having to upload a damn thing. I hate peer to peer systems for that reason. Pay for a download, get a download. If I want to torrent something I'll go to the pirate bay.

But to return to the topic, am liking the game. It's not very original, a few games have come out in a similar style lately, but it's good clean fun and nicely presented. Really harsh on the companies that have made their own top down shooters though to have Valve just drop a gigantic freebie into the market. That's good for the gamers but if I'd just sunk time and money into a project that was in any way similar I'd probably be clearing out the stationary cupboard right about now.

My white plastic MacBook is still alive and kicking after almost four years! It's still my only computer, and I use it many hours each day.. The original battery is still at 91% capacity, meaning I still get four hours of surfing+iTunes on one charge!
My last laptop - also 13", lower specs - had about 1,5hrs battery time out of the box.. That one was scavenged for parts after a year of frustration in favour of the Mac..

Sadly, and more to the point of this thread: It's just too d*mn old to play Source games, meaning I won't be playing this seemingly brilliant game anytime soon :( Good thing I still have Half-Life (1) buried in a wine bottle somewhere on here :D

I can't join public games either, I've only managed to join private games.

I suppose it wouldn't be a Valve release if there weren't at least a few teething problems.

very narrow thinking from both of you, if your Downloading the game p2p would be active to speed the download up (most could just be on the servers) once downloaded p2p off or and users who do not want it an tick box to turn it off (the way WOW does it but not the same way as they way they implemented it its crap)

users with stupid caps should change there isp (UK only, overs country bad luck)

this game Should of been pre load there was no need for this to not be pre loadable after 20 mins i managed to do my pot luck pause and close trick to get it to randomly pick an free download server was getting 300KB-1.2MB/s
