The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings announced

CD Projekt has announced The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings for multiple platforms and a 2011 release date.

Polish developer CD Projeckt has announced a sequel to 2007's The Witcher, dubbed The Witcher 2: The Assassin of Kings. Good title, no?

The game is confirmed for a PC release in Q1 2011, with unspecified console versions confirmed but not yet revealed.

"The engine is multiplatform, but any announcements will come in the future," a spokesperson told Eurogamer.

The Witcher 2 will continue the adventures of mutant monster hunter Geralt as he goes up against an evil elf called Lorveth and a new evil-doer called only Kingslayer - though this time he'll be joined by sorceress Triss Merigold and sword-slinger Vernon Roche, both returning from the first game. The characters won't be under player control, but will play a big part in the story apparently.

The Witcher 2 will sport a new engine and refined visuals, but looks to centre on many of the same themes and mechanics from the first game - i.e. a dense, rich fiction packed with racism and raciness. Expect nudity a'plenty.

Atari is set to publish the game in North America, with 1C publishing taking control in Russia and mainland Europe. No UK publisher is yet announced.

We quite liked the original Witcher, even though it had plenty of problems when it was released. Hardcore RPG fans will find the Enhanced Edition a great purchase, we reckon.

It's on consoles, there will be no nudity. Expect the adult themes to also boil down to, "should I shoot this kid or save the village?"

first game (enhanced edition) was great. Hope they don't mess up the sequel catering to the console market.

If they do, I will not buy it. Simples.

Same as MW - didn't buy it. Bought Bad Company instead. Which is excellent, btw.

Witcher 2? Can not wait.

I loved the first game, it was a hidden gem (albeit a really really unpolished gem).

Think it will pick up directly after that cliffhanger ending?

i don't recall a 'Vernon Roche" from the first game either... `twas a good game, though I disliked not being able to customize the movement keys.. that annoyed my hands to no end ,, otherwise.. solid game! ... very well might pick this one up too .. provided I'm done Mass Effecting and DragonAgeing ;)

I still need to play the first one, it's been sat on my shelf for a long, long time.

Looks good but never got round to giving it some quality time.

witcher was one of the games that sticks in your head.. can still remember very clearly certain parts of that game- I played alot of games too and there's only a few can recall like that

it starts off kinda shaky but got good =] I mean time warping around, unique swordplay (which you think is lame until you upgrade some things) not to mention one of the better end videos in a game loved it

The first is one of my favorite PC games ever. CD Projekt Red are a fantastic developer, and they strike me as one of the few who care about the quality of the final product, rather than miling their customers as a cash cow.

I'm not worried about the sequal being "dumbed down" for consoles. This will be a PC game, first and foremost

I wouldn't have agreed with you about the caring about quality except that they released the enhanced edition, albeit late. Takes a lot of sincerity to admit that your game was broken to the tune of a six gig patch.

I liked the first game a lot but never managed to get into it, it didn't grab me like Dragon Age or Mass Effect. I think I chalk this up to the first chapters being rather tedious and long. Most games start dull, but you could almost lose some games in the warm-up parts of The Witcher there's that much of them.
