ELSPA has announced that it has begun to seriously crack down on R4 importers and resellers in the UK, having just helped sentence one UK-based importer to a year in prison.

The R4 is little more than a DS-cartridge sized adapter that allows users to run pirated games and custom software on the Nintendo DS and, while there are a number of different similar products available, the R4 is the most popular.

The unlucky UK resident in question, Yun Can Meng, has been sentenced to a year in prison after pleading guilty to importing R4 devices into country - around 26,000 of them.

Meng was sentenced in Hull Crown Court and was caught through the work of Council Trading Standards, Humberside Police and ELSPA's Crime Unit.

"Our crime unit is pleased with the outcome of this trial and pleased to see the Court of Appeal’s copyright judgement is being robustly enforced. Intellectual property (IP) theft is an important issue for the country’s videogames industry - as is protecting it," said an official ELSPA release.
