Nintendo of America's boss, Reggie Fils-Aime, has commented that the company has no plans to release a new Wii SKU or to update the hardware for a while yet.

"We are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it," Reggie told BusinessWeek (via EG).

Instead, Nintendo plans to reinvigorate the now lack-lustre hardware inside the Wii with some new games in franchise that you totally wouldn't expect Nintendo to be working on - oh, wait, no, cancel that. It's just a new Metroid and Super Mario Galaxy game.

Nintendo doesn't have any definite plans to combat the media-hub appeal of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the future, though it's confident that the recently announced addition of streaming Netflix video (in 480p!) will help.

As Eurogamer points out, there's been lots of rumours that Nintendo is working on a high-def Wii SKU, but the company still hasn't announced or confirmed anything. It's starting to look like it may not be on the cards, especially since Reggie has previously said that HD-output isn't enough to warrant a new SKU.

Sony and Microsoft are constantly expanding their featurelists though, with the PS3 wands set to bring more motion control to the PlayStation and Natal promising much more for the Xbox 360.

Nintendo has patented an inflatable horse though...
