Relic has hinted that it may develop Space Marine for the PC if it continues to see strong demand for it.
Talk of heresy is rife among the gnarly Space Marine veterans who rule Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe, but many gamers thought that developer Relic had committed the ultimate act of heresy when it announed that
Space Marine would be a
console-exclusive . However, following an online backlash, as well as a
petition, Relic has now hinted that a PC version could be on the cards.
Speaking to
bit-tech, a spokesperson for Relic said that
“we're always looking at feedback on forums and know there are lots of people who are interested in a PC version. If we continue to see a strong desire for a PC version of Space Marine, who knows what might happen!"
The aforementioned petition now has over 300 signatures on it, which isn’t a huge number, but it does show the strong feeling of betrayal felt by some PC gamers. Claiming to speak for the community of
Dawn of War and the Warhammer 40,000 franchise, the petition tells Relic that
“as PC players, we have cheered you on throughout all the years for each game that you have made. And so we ask that on behalf of our following that you remember us and show the gaming industry and the world why you guys deserve the fans that you have.”
Relic’s spokesperson acknowledged that PC gamers had played a pivotal role in the developer’s success, telling
bit-tech that
"I want to say how much we love and appreciate all the fans who have played our PC games for years; you've obviously helped make Relic the studio it is today.”
However, he added that
“our goal when setting out to make Space Marine was to bring that same Warhammer 40,000 experience to console gamers in a unique and awesome way.” When the game was first announced in May this year, Relic’s general manager, Jonathan Dowdeswell, also said that
Space Marine would be “built from the ground up for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 systems.” As such, it’s unlikely that a PC version of the game would be optimised for the PC in the same way as
Dawn of War II.
Would you be interested in playing a PC version of
Space Marine, or are you happy with
Dawn of War II? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

They're a very PC centric dev, and I don't think we have too much to fear of them going all "console" on us.
NO CRAPPY CONSOLE PORT PLEASE!
I don't think CoH's MP balance is too bad tbh. Staghound broke the game but the fixed it and MP games I play are never decided by just one unit type. Panzerkrieg is rubbish though.
PC satisfaction.
staghound? i think you mean the t17. It got a nerf in 2.6 anyway so it's fine. the only things that need to be fixed to be honest are the kangaroo carrier and the 3 shot pak bug. Haven't tried panzerkrieg since i can never find a server.
Also, dawn of war 2 was quite good. if it's not a "real rts" then go play starcraft. i found DOW II to be quite refreshing with its campaign and RPG elements.
on topic though. i think relic is merely trying to keep the minority happy so that they don't turn on them like IW did.
btw... what genre is the game?
EDIT: Game type appears to be 3rd person shooter from footage I've seen but I haven't seen anything other than the original game trailer. I'll get it whatever the type is as 40K just brings out the inner geek in me :)
"There are over 17 mirrors in the mirror world!"
I'd rather they buggered off to the consoles if that's what they really want to do, and let us play games for grownups.
But we're running out of devs :<
Anyway, it seems somewhat experimental, a PC RTS dev making a 3rd person shooter on consoles. I'm dubious about it's quality at all tbh, they have no experience in that area. If it is a great game of course I'd like to see it on PC though, even if it is so I can use my 360 controller to play at higher resolutions, textures and framerates.
Long live Lion El' Jonson and the Emperor!
Screw that heretic, he went to Chaos. Leman Russ, now there was a primarch I'd follow.
that is the best news i've read ever! im a HUGE fan of HW series.
Are you listening IW? Over 100,000 on a petition to you and your sticking your fingers in your ears for a far less complex change. Numpties.
A 1st person, FPS, 40k game with you as a Space Marine. Designed for the PC.
Start you off as a recruit in training. Then work your way through the ranks to Captain/Lord or whatever. As you progress through the ranks (time span of centuries), you start being able to get tactical and issuing orders to your sqaud(s).
You get to take part in battles on different worlds all over the galaxy and space hulks.
Multiplayer could see your squad taking on AI going through a - designed for - an all human squad campaign, or versus another human enemy squad. Dedicated servers.
You get to custom paint your armour for multiplayer, obviously which will help with clans. As your clan does better maybe they get unlocks that allow further customisation of the paint jobs. Individual unlocks let you add things onto your armour, wep unlocks, terminator armour etc etc.
Add ons can allow you to follow different storylines for different races. To see the campaign from the other side sort of thing.
That is what I want to see.
Which is odd considering i've never played the tabletop original.
Just such a fabulous universe.
