Modern Warfare 2 PC delayed

The release date for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has been pushed back by two weeks.

Activision has delayed the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 it seems, pushing the multi-platform game back by two weeks on the PC, but not on other platforms.

The game will now be released on November 10th for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but has been pushed back until November 24th on the PC according to RockPaperShotgun (beware, link contains some naughty words).

Activision has yet to explicitly confirm the delay by the looks of it, but it's hardly an unlikely scenario given how many multi-platform games are being delayed on PC nowadays over fears of piracy.

Speaking to a source within the PC-side of the games industry last month, bit-tech was told that although publishers often try to hide the piracy fears by talking of adding extra features the real cause is always piracy. Activision previously fell into controversy with fans when it announced the price of the enormously popular game would be upped higher than most other titles earlier this year.

Other possible reasons for the delay include a manufacturing problem, according to ElectronicTheatre, which would fit with the enormously late turn of events and lack of formal comment.

Naturally, we're contacting Activision for a comment and will let you know more when we do. In the mean time you can tell us what you think in the forums.

We've waited this long, a little bit more won't kill us.

I just hope they don't have some awful anti-piracy measures strapped on.
Quote smc8788 5th October 2009, 21:17
Seriously, are Activision actually wanting people to pirate this game or are they just stupid? Whatever it is, the only thing they're succeeding in doing is pissing off their customers. A pirate would wait the two weeks then get it for free, not pay £50 for an inferior console version. I would write a letter, but clearly reading is above their intelligence level...

Thinking about it, it would probably be better if they made PC games being released two weeks after the console version a standard for all games, at least that way there would be less outrage when a publisher decides to rape its customers for all they're worth.

The hole point of buying modern warfare 2 is the multilayer, that you can only play if you buy a original copy of the game.

So why worry about piracy then?

"Delayed, no demo, higher price = guaranteed to make people into pirates, Arr!"
Quote tad2008 5th October 2009, 22:15
Well, it's basically common knowledge that it's easier to develop for the consoles and then come back to tune any games for the PC platform, due to it's inherent flexibility and creating a few more demands on the developers. For the sake of a 2 week delay after all the time any game has already spent in development is hardly worth worrying about and if it gives us PC users a better tuned and more polished end product then at the end of the day we win.

As for the price hike to try and limit any supposed piracy has on their expected revenue is surely to back fire, or will make people wait it out until the price drops.

Just think of all those consol-ites out there as PC beta testers for PC players, lol
Quote Matticus 5th October 2009, 22:23
I am probably reading way too much into this, but I really do think this is nothing to do with piracy or bugs etc. I think it is just to make people who are both console and PC gamers buy it on the console, I get the feeling that they are trying to move people over to consoles, so they have to support the PC less.

Development for consoles is easier, and I guess keeping servers up and running for consoles is a lot easier. It makes sense for them to want more people to play it on consoles rather than the PC.
Quote rpsgc 5th October 2009, 22:30

2- No demo
3- Delays game

Quote Andune 5th October 2009, 23:30
Wait, what do you expect me to do if my pre-order don't arrive on the 10th Activision? Just sit and wait for it or maybe play a pirated copy on a console (:O console piracy exists!) until the pre-order arrives?
The pirate option sounds tempting (easier than to pirate a PC-game), it doesn't seem like publishers will stop using PC-piracy as an excuse anytime soon so maybe if console piracy increases they will have to rethink (yeah, it's a stupid idea but nothing else seems to work).

And a "manufacturing problem"? Please, haven't you heard about Steam? Wouldn't that solve some piracy problems too?

I don't think its a piracy issue. These guys make billions of dollars in the video game industry, they aren't stupid, so they must know that delaying the PC version won't reduce piracy, it will increase it, just like it does every time this happens.
Quote SimoomiZ 6th October 2009, 02:25
It's pretty obvious why they're ALL doing this, as for the currently favored stated reason of: "optimization" , it probably sits alongside that Nvidia Fermi card used in a recent presentation. It's the multi platform, first day of release, PC piracy issue; game comes out, hits the torrent sites , many homes that have both PC and console select the no cost option - sale lost. Fewer people than many might imagine, actually play the big online multiplayer orientated games online, where it can be stopped. I just wish they would come out and say this, I think most sensible PC gamers would respect their reasons and their candor.

It's harder for people to pirate on consoles. Hence they try to get people to buy it on consoles by releasing it later on the PC.

Makes me wonder if they think the game is not going to be so good.....there is no demo.....now the pc version is delayed...many people pirate on the pc first to see if it is worth buying on a console as console piracy is not so wide spread. Many then prefer to buy particularly online games on the 360 because xboxlive is very good easy to use and fewer hacks but this will prevent them from trailing it at all if they want to buy early.........Uhhmmmm....I'm getting suspicious and will now wait for some critical reviews.......trouble is if I don't buy on release day I very often don't buy at all.

So the game is expensive and it'll contain some sort of online copy protection as well(probably). Now they're delaying the game probably because of piracy. Are they so stupid to try and sell games to pirates? They'll only screw those who'd buy the game! It seems big publishers are out of touch with reality, and it's getting worse every year...
Quote Baz 6th October 2009, 11:13
Considering the rampant piracy that modern warfare received, I think Activision is well within it's right to integrate some kind of effective anti-piracy to stop cracked/hacked servers. Any on-line activation is to be expected with a modern multiplayer game. Sadly a 2 tweek wait makes baz sad, but if it means less thieving smacktards on servers then i'm all for it.

Why dose everyone think the PC is the pirate king? i have said before i mod 360s i don't do the games but i do the consoles and i know 60% of 360 owners play coped games!

The games are sold £3-4 each down the pub and you don't see that with PC games if company's are so worried about piracy they should only put games on the ps3 as i don't know of any hacks for that yet

Wow, I have no idea where to start..

For those who complain about Demo's, have you played the first one? Grats, you now know the control scheme, how it works, how it plays. Are you that simple minded that you forgot and need to re-learn? Aim, Shoot, Keep Moving. It's a "2".. A sequel by the same company. Thus it isn't going to be worse than the first, so it can only get better. (Normally this may not be the case but since Story Line isn't the main focus on the game, that's not a worry. It's about shooting. Which means the worst that can happen is they use the same engine, same levels, same weapons, thus can't get any worse.)

For the pirating issues, yeah looks like they set it back to allow time for it to be bought on Consoles first, OR for more to be made for the PC. Since it'll be a way more popular game for the PC, maybe they want more copies made so they don't automatically get sold out.

Yeah it could be pirated on the consoles, but I'm sure nobody waited this long for a sequel, to first get the game, and then say "Yay! I got it! Now to pirate it so others can play!" NO, they are going to sit with their console and play the game themselves, so you'll still probably wait 2 weeks for a console pirate to come out.

Besides, it's only 2 weeks... If you feel the need to pirate it, hurt the PC game distributors more, eventually there won't be ANY sequels and you'll only have yourselves to blame. "There won't be any 3rd game.. .. But at least I got the 2nd for free!"

Seriously, sorry, but grow up people. -.-
Quote Bauul 7th October 2009, 09:39
I'm with Orothe above.

It's two frigging weeks people, are you that impatient you can't wait another 14 days? What's to say there isn't a manufacturing problem?

Even if there isn't, and this is a ploy, it'll be to move people towards the (probably more expensive, and thus more profitable) console version. I doubt it's got much to do with piracy, as any idiot with half a brain knows pushing a game back will only increase piracy.

So for crying out loud calm down and stop throwing your toys out of the pram.
Quote rpsgc 7th October 2009, 11:04
I'll just quote this from the IW forums:
Quote:
I submit the following challenge: Buy the game on 11/10, put it on your shelf and don't touch it for two weeks. Don't want to do that? Think it's unnecessary? I think we're actually on the same page.

'nuff said.
Quote technogiant 7th October 2009, 15:44
