Courtney Love suing over Guitar Hero 5

Courtney Love has announced that she will be suing Activision for breach of contract in Guitar Hero 5.

It turns out that Alex isn't the only person who's been a bit unnerved by Kurt Cobain's appearance in Guitar Hero 5, as Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, is also a bit upset by it all - and she intends to do something about it.

While it isn't clear exactly what Courtney Love takes issue with in Guitar Hero 5, she has indicated that she'll be taking legal action against Activision over Guitar Hero 5, which features ex-Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain as a character.

"For the record this Guitar Hero s**t is breach of contract on a Bullys part and there will be a proper addressing of this and retraction," said Courtney Love via her official Twitter account.

Cobain's role as a character in the game means that his model can be used for a variety of different songs and animations, which more than a few people have described as being a bit strange and uncomfortable to watch - though you can listed to the official bit-tech and Custom PC Gaming Podcast for our brief thoughts on the matter.

"WE are going to sue the s**t out of Activision we being the Trust the Estate the LLC the various LLCs Cobain Enterprises," reaffirmed Courtney Love later.

Courtney's official twitter feed has since run into a very long, NSFW rant about the game, so check it out if you want the full skinny on the topic - there's simply too much swearing to justify replicating it all here.

What do you think of Kurt Cobain being featured in Guitar Hero 5? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

I don't get why it's so weird. Dead folk get brought back to live in all kinds of ways. Film being the most obvious. Why is a game any different.

What a bitch...

Why can she sue them? Can you copyright someone's appearance? I realise that if not she could be going on the ground of it being damaging, but surely a simulation of a famous musician being on-stage enjoying himself can't be damaging, surely?

Likeness rights are pretty much copyrighting someone's appearance. As Courtney owns Cobain's she can license them out to whoever she chooses, including Activision for use in GH5...which she did. ANd is now angry that Activision took some liberties with it. Like making Kurt rap.

Er, sounds about right to me. She may be whacko, but I highly doubt she's doing this for the money.

Jees... her twitter is pretty confusing. And she should learn to spell.
Looking through the Twitter, it sounds like she's doing it for the Money, TBH. She's been bitching about that all day.
She licensed activision. Sorry to hear that she now regrets the decision. Hope she loses the court case (unlikely, not impossible)

Is that really possible to own someone else's appearance? I can see this getting thrown out of court.

George Lucas famously owns Mark Hamil's iirc. yes, likeness rights are a real, genuine commodity.

I think it's more a sobriety thing, then a spelling thing.

fair argument... and she still claims (on her twitter): "**** all of you. I am a good mother." (to paraphrase)

Left the Techno era and went into the grunge era.

No more Charlie and his cat (meow), and distorted guitars abound ;)

I don't see what right she has to complain, she licensed them to use him in game, she surely would've seen the finished product before giving the go ahead for him to be in the game so I see no reason why she wants to sue them. I don't see why anyone can feel wierd about playing a dead man, ROCK BAND THE BEATLES FOR GOD SAKE!!!!

Having Kurt bumped off was quite a shrewd business move by Courtney.

Maybe she just wanted a fanfair launch like The Beatles Rockstar launch. Having Yoko and George Harrisons mrs there to promote and give it acceptence.

Activision wouldn't have gone this far to release date without dotting the i's and crossing the t's in legal stuff. If they've put him in it's because someone has signed to say they can. It may have been after one of Courtney's lost weekend's or years.

As themcman alluded to, NSFW is "Not Safe For Work", i.e. Contains nudity, foul language, violence or other nastyness that might not go down too well with the management of whatever company you work for.

We seem to be forgetting that Jimi Hendrix was in the last game. They are music legends and deserve to be remembered. This will introduce the music of our youth to a new generation. I will also assume that Cobain Enterprises must have been involved as the songs are being used, they need to be OK'ed legally before they are used. She hasn't a leg to stand on...Stupid bi*ch.

I still miss his music.. remember right after he went sideways, april 1st rolled around and some radio jokey in atlanta had me swearing in the mirror getting ready for work XD he was saying stuff like he was glad cobain was gone and kept playing gunshot noises in the background

I didn't realise it was april 1st and was considering going down to the station later that day rofl sucks we don't have many good artists, and when we do they seem to can't help but be destructive- like the cost of being a genius.. so much pain and then add pressure of being a idol and they break.. courtney is actually very smart- she puts up the dumb b front though.. just read some of her rants when cobain was alive sometime- she's very learned, and actually makes sense when she talks about the music industry and how jacked up it was at the time

bit ironic she has the world love in her name. will not forget that video which showed her out and about with someone famous (cant remember who) and she started a huge rant about needing her ****** privacy and the cameramen said we 're not interested in u and proceeded to follow and ask the other the other person questions. and after a couple of minutes courtney love starts screaming stop ignoring me over and over again. insecure, talentless and nastiness often go hand in hand. cant blame kurt, most people would probably od after a couple of months with her
