Sega has teased a new Sonic game for 2010 - a 2D, high-definition one that could mark a return to form.
After many, many years of awful attempts to bring the
Sonic the Hedgehog series into a 3D universe, with the latest travesty being the terrible
Sonic: Unleashed, Sega has finally decided to go back to basics - with a new 2D
Sonic.
Codenamed as Project Needlemouse, the game will apparently take Sonic back to his former glory in a completely two-dimensional adventure that'll be rendered in gorgeous high-definition.
The release date listed for the game is an unilluminating '2010' and no platform is listed either, but the mention of HD puts the Nintendo platforms out of the picture and makes a Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release even more likely.
Aside from that all that's really known about the game is that it will make use of the old-fashioned style of
Sonic art, some of which can be seen on the official Needlemouse
teaser website. It's also known that the game won't be a simple remake or enhancement of the original games, with the teaser trailer unveiled by
GameSpot Australia promising that it'll be an all new adventure built from the ground up for a HD experience.
Finally then, it looks like there may be some hope on the horizon after so many lack-lustre and occasionally disturbing
Sonic games.
It's also worth noting that the announcement comes on the tenth anniversary of the Sega Dreamcast, which helps cement the specialness of the occasion. Look out for more Dreamcast coverage coming to the site in the near future, but in the mean time why not share your thoughts in
the forums.
Brilliant news!
@ mi1ez The pc is a far better gaming platform than it was in the early 90's, i think they probably would do a pc release with it... they did for some of the 3D games.
Sam
The teaser really is a teaser this time, not giving anything away.
I really want this game to be good and not to fail like all the recent sonic games
Also I hope they put more throught into level design so it's not all about speed but with some exploration, platforming and what not too.
None of that Linear roller coaster ride crap from Sonic Rush/Unleashed!
Want.
I said that like the mega drive did and I felt like is a kid again!
I remember getting Sonic and Knuckles, using all the other Sonic's it was like getting a load of new games in one!
Sonic for ever!
Ah the memories.
I remember! I also remember the sheer speed it would get up to when you got far, i think that level brought on Epilepsy in most of my generation!
OMG I completely forgot how fast it got as well. I can remember some of the later levels of the mini game we just ridiculous in terms of speed and timing.
Not much to explore in a 2D world. I really enjoyed Sonic Rush.
Honestly Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were very good. The problem with the current 3D Sonic games is bad level design and bugs. I played a bit of Sonic the Hedgehog and got to a point in a level that Sonic needed to grab onto a wire and slide across. Getting Sonic to actually grab the wire was infuriating. I bounced off of it many times in an effort to complete the level. Stuff like that should never happen in a Sonic game. Sonic is all about speed and you have bugs like that which stop you in your tracks. It is like no one played through the whole game before it shipped.
Apparently it is owned by a couple of devs who just wanted to make a game themselves to show off their talents. They claim to have no affiliation with Sega, or a codename needlemouse project Sega might be working on.
