PlayStation Go dated, priced

The PlayStation Go will hit stores in America and Europe this October, priced at $249 according to Sony.

Sony has provided official release dates and prices for the new handheld system, the PlayStation Go, which was officially revealed at Sony's press conference yesterday at E3 2009.

Other than dates and prices the announcement held few new details however, with a lot of the demonstration videos and details about the new system having been leaked before the show had even properly started.

As it is, Sony confirmed during the conference that the PlayStation Go will be available in North America and Europe on October 1st, while Japan will unusually be getting the system a little later, on Novermber 1st.

Not all of the price details have yet been released, but we do know that the PlayStation Go will cost $249 at launch in North America or 26,800 Yen in Japan - which converts to $280. No European price point has yet been announced and it's unlikely that figuring the price point out will be as simple as converting the amounts thanks to the state of the economy. Still, the American price is equal to about £150 at the moment.

Either way, it looks like the PlayStation Go will be a bit more expensive than most existing PSP packages, despite the feature set having been mostly trimmed down through the lack of an optical drive and the re-focus on downloadable content.

We'll bring you more details on the PlayStation Go when we have them and a full review as soon as we can get our hands on one, but until then you can discuss the prices in the forums.

I still think that Sonys target market for this is all wrong... they want older buyers... people who are unlikely to whip out a psp on the tube, they are more likely to be using an iphone or something similar. the blog about sony losing the plot a bit was spot on :(

Actually, the conversion is very easy - you take the dollar amount and change the dollar sign to either a pound or euro sign, whichever will lead to the biggest screwing for the customer.

The good: UMD is now deader than Jacqui Smith's political career.
The bad: Price, the fact that Sony appear to have totally lost the plot.

Still considering an iPod Touch for on-the-move gaming/tunes and there's nothing about the PSP Go that makes me want to change my mind.

I've started calling it the PSP "Cartman" Edition (thanks Baz) I just can't take it's looks seriously anymore.

It's over priced. Sony had a chance to cap their showing of the PSP support with the debut of the redesign and similar pricing point (like Nintendo with the DSi) to make the transition easier. $250 is hard to choke down when the current PSP still for $170, not to mention they going pure digital distribution from now which strains current PSP owners who didn't buy 8GB or 16GB memory cards.

They're still delusional, seriously, if you're going do a redux of an old product, at least make it:

1. Smaller
2. Take out a useless feature.(in their case they did)
3. Keep a consistent price.

They've taken out one useless thing, and added a few more.

I like UMD - it allows me to go into a Game store and buy nearly new games for a Tenner, rather than £20-£30 on the PSN store - and when I'm bored of them I can sell them on again. Looks like those days are over!
