2K unveils BioShock 2 multiplayer

BioShock 2 will have a multiplayer segment set before the fall of rapture, with players testing new plasmids.

2K Games has revealed the first set of real, concrete details about the multiplayer segment of BioShock 2. Among the revealed details is the confirmed news that the multiplayer section of the game will be a sort-of prequel to the first game and that it will feature upgradeable characters.

The multiplayer aspect of BioShock 2 will be developed by Digital Extremes, who had no connection to the first game, and will let players see the underwater megapolis of Rapture before it sprung a leak and fell into disrepair.

The multiplayer game has also been given a strong setting, with players cast as test subjects in a bout of plasmid-based experiments run by Sinclair Solutions. Players will also get to run riot through areas such as Mercury Suites too, which has been re-worked to better suit a multiplayer mode according to Eurogamer.

One of the most interesting things to emerge about BioShock 2's multiplayer though is the fact that it'll apparently offer an experience-driven challenge, with players gradually able to unlock new plasmids, tonics and weapons through a series of upgrades that come with experience. 2K hasn't offered a huge amount of detail on how this might work, but we wouldn't be surprised to see that it functions similarly to other multiplayer games like Team Fortress 2, or Call of Duty.

"The fans asked for a multiplayer experience and we answered," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K.

"With Digital Extremes delivering a multiplayer experience for BioShock 2 that features all of the things that make BioShock unique, we’re holding ourselves to a high standard so that we can deliver the depth and variety that fans of the BioShock universe demand."

Hmmmm, I can see this either being awesome or a complete waste of time ala The Darkness MP

Meh, I don't do multiplayer that much, so I'd rather they focus all their attention (and finances) on making the single player campaign as awesome as possible. However, seeing as how someone else is doing the actual MP, then this need not affect the SP portion. Don't care that much about MP though.

This will be interesting to see. Considering the BioShock franchise is sort of an RPG and FPS smashed together under the sea, I very well predict if this will turn out well. I hope it does, as I loved the original and look forward to BioShock 2.

Peace

Well as for me, i don't have many online friends that care to play as much as I do. I am with Journeyer, and hoping that the single player will be as fun as the previous was.

Good to see they are working hard though...

Yeah that's what I think a lot when I play lots of games, The Darkness is a great example of this. The only reason to put MP in is if it's either a very good MP and not some tacked on rubbish (such as CoD4, Rainbow Six Vegas, Company of Heroes, etc.) or does something a bit different and special (such as L4D).
