Bethesda Softworks has just announced a new Fallout game, dubbed Fallout: New Vegas, which will be released at some point next year.

The new title, which was revealed by Pete Hines in an exclusive press conference, won't be developed solely by Bethesda either but will involve Obsidian Entertainment. Obsidian is mainly formed of ex-Black Isles staffers and is the same studio behind the likes of Star War: Knights of the Old Republic II and Neverwinter Nights 2.

The game is currently planned for release next year on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. While other details on the game are scarce Bethesda has confirmed that Fallout: New Vegas won't be a direct follow-on from Fallout 3.

"It is not a sequel to Fallout 3," said Bethesda's Pete Hines. "It's simply another Fallout game in that universe."

Hines did however confirm that it will be similar in construction to Fallout 3, so expect more bleak wastelands and FPS RPG hybrids on the horizon soon as more details are said to be coming soon. We'll keep you posted.

Since the project is being farmed out to Obsidian Entertainment, Bethesda confirmed that development for Fallout: New Vegas will not involve or impact on what the core Bethesda team, led by Todd Howard, are working on.

Practically nothing else is known at this point, but judging from the title we'd say that it's very likely that the game will explore how the state of Nevada and the city of Las Vegas survived after the war. We can't be the only ones hoping that it'll draw heavily on New Reno in Fallout 2, can we? Let us know in the forums and be sure to read our Fallout 3 review if you want more info on the franchise.
