Doom 4 will not be a sequel to Doom 3, says id Software - but nor will it be a reboot for the series.
id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead has confirmed that
Doom 4 will definitely not be a reboot of the
Doom franchise - but nor will it be a sequel to previous
Doom games.
"
Doom 3 was sort of a reboot," Hollenshead said in an interview with
GameSpot.
"
It's a little bit different than those, and if I told you why, I would get my ass kicked when I got back. So I'll just have to leave it at that," he added cannily.
id Software has admitted that it's still very much in the early stages of development for
Doom 4 and hasn't even finished hiring for the project just year, though the team is confident that fans will approve of the new direction.
"
It's very much deep in development. But everything I've seen on it is classic Doom, so I don't really have worries that people aren't going to like it and start talking about it," he said.
Doom 4 is just one of several titles that id Software is currently working on - the others including
Rage,
Quake Live and some unnamed iPhone games. Which are you most excited about? Give us your thoughts in
the forums.
I didn't even know they were planning to do a fourth installment.
Will keep eyes peeled for this one.
I agree with your sentiment, however I disagree with your subtle hint that you would pirate the game.
If it's not a sequel and not a reboot then what the hell is it? Could it be like the difference between Quake 1 and Quake 2, or maybe a standalone like Quake 3?
can't wait for their Rage game, when is it supposed to be out?
true that Doom 3 was a once through affair, but it was a hell of a lot better than Doom 2 ;)
I missed the keys and maps of Doom 1 and 2 tho.....
looking foreward to it.
Hopefully won't need a flashlight/duct-tape mode for this one. Seriously, you'd think that they'd have a few guns with lights on (even in Star Trek they had lights on the end of the phaser rifles).
It was a deliberate gameplay mechanic you div. The duct-tape mod totally ruined the atmosphere.
On topic: Could be a Quake 1/Quake 2 thing, but the setting of Doom (unlike Quake) is quite clear, so I think that'd be hard to do. Maybe they just mean it'll still be about Hell and demons and the such like, but it'll be a new story, and won't have anything to do with Phobos, Doomguy or the UAC.
im gonna go run through doom 3 again tonight to celebrate \o/
seems to be the flavour of the month at the moment, and it does work well in Left4Dead.
I found not being able to see what I was shooting at made the game pointless.
If there was some ambient light so you could see shadows/outlines it would have been something, but in some areas I couldn't see anything without a flashlight, so some areas the game would play like this:
Imp jumps out,
switch from flashlight to weapon,
fire,
missed because Imp has moved (and I can't see it 'cos it's too dark),
die.
reload,
repeat :(.
After installing the flashlight mod I quite enjoyed the game.
Let's face it, if you were roaming dark corriders with monsters jumping out at you would you rather hold a torch or strap the torch to whatever weapon you were carrying (or dual wield with pistol)?
and i actually love the dark/not able to strap a flashlight to ur weapon. tho i would prefer somewhere at the end level they would get it eventually.
it makes sense to think that in the lost dark space station infested with monster, one could not easily find the right utilities to properly strap a flashlight to ur weapon. swapping back n forth is ur TEMPORARILY best option. n its fun too. gives more challenge. creates the atmosphere. no, u cant just ducktape a flashlight to the hot muzzle or frame of an assault weapon. tho dual-wielding with a pistol is a no-brainer tho..... hm.... good point........
but for a space station in the middle of freakin nowhere sometime in the future... to have NO weapons that originally have a light-source attached to it... thats just stupid.
Some kind of ability to drop the flashlight, thereby giving a bit of ambient light, would have been an interesting way to combat the problem.
I know I would be dropping that sucker (as long as it was a semi-solid floor I was walking on, and even then, that probably wouldn't be there first thought going through my head...) rather than turning it off and putting it back in my pocket carefully for later use.
Doom 3 was sort of a piece of crapola....
Oh and about the flashlight. If we in this age can run a flashlight for 4 days using a high power cree led. In the year 2412 (whatever future Doom3 was in) it should be ultra bright 10000 lumens running on organic isotopes or something that can last for over a year.
And it should be floating in the air about 2 meters above/besides you. Pointing the light automatically the way your looking at. This way without being a direct target to your enemy. A enemy could otherwise just shoot at the light and you would probably be hit for sure.
- walk down near pitch-black corridor, nothing in front, nothing behind.
- walk down more near pitch-black corridor, nothing in front, nothing behind.
- walk down more near pitch-black corridor, nothing in front - whoops! Imp behind you, how?
- kill imp, turn forward - surprise surprise another imp!
- kill imp, secret wall opens, more imps.
- walk down near pitch-black corridor
- ad nauseum
No variety in the levels.
Apart from that it scared the crap out of me.
Take the lessons they got from D3 and improve
