Gore Verbinski making Second Life movie

Pirates of the Caribbean - known to Joe only as "That Secret of Monkey Island Rip-off".

Gore Verbinski, director of Pirates of the Caribbean and all round Hollywood money-maker, has purchased the rights to make a film based on the free MMO Second Life.

Verbinski will apparently be basing the film on a 2007 article in the Wall Street Journal written by Alexandra Alter about a married man who falls in love with his in-game wife. Pretending to be a muscle-bound businessman, the husband is in reality a 53-year old diabetic chain smoker.

Second Life is a totally free MMO game where players create their own in-game items and content through a series of content-creation tools, selling them to other players. While the game has millions of players and a huge following, Verbinski admits that the game is pretty new to him and that he'll be having help on the script from Steven Knight according to Variety.

Second Life isn't the only game that Verbinski is working on turning into a film though, as the director is also working on making a film based on BioShock, with help from the games creative director, Ken Levine.

The Second Life movie will apparently be made in conjunction with Universal and will focus on the detrimental effect that MMO games can have on the real lives of players. Sounds like it'll be both original and amazing then.

all game films so far have taken great source material and messed it up bad. So no they're taking the worst (if indeed it is a) game and hoping it'll get better in film? Idiots

If they can pull this one off I'll be more than just surprised.

BioShock though? Hell of a story! And it's not a Boll movie. That's what gives me hope.

*epic facepalm*

Sort of interested in the Bioshock project though - at least since it is not Uwe Boll doing it...
