Burnout Paradise to get paid DLC

Electronic Arts has announced Big Shot Island for Burnout Paradise, a whole new landmass for players to drive on.

Burnout developers EA Criterion has announced the first piece of paid-for downloadable content for Burnout Paradise, dubbed Big Surf Island.

Previously, Criterion has released only free updates and downloadable packs for Burnout Paradise, such as the Cagney update and the Burnout Paradise Bikes pack. Big Surf Island is the first piece of downloadable content for the game that players will be required to pay for, even though it was originally intended to be a free pack too.

"Big Surf is the culmination of everything we learned creating Paradise City, and we want it to bring you a truly spectacular new experience," reads the Criterion blog.

"We never expected to create anything this ambitious for the island, but as it progressed we got more and more excited about what it could become. In fact, that’s the story of all our Downloadable Content."

In terms of content, Big Surf Island should be a significantly sized new land mass which is decorated with plenty of jumps, barrel rolls and creative ways to wreck your car. Criterion has gone out of the way to design an area intended mainly for those who enjoy new stunts over races.

The pack will also add in a new dune buggy vehicle, called the Dust Storm which is designed to make the most of all the jumps and stunts on the island.

No price has yet been confirmed for the pack, but it will be available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Excited by the idea of spinning off some new jumps? Let us know in the forums, after checking out our Burnout Paradise review, naturally.

Better than nothing, because I can't see myself playing the game much more (almost got 101% on car and bike license).

I'll get through the free stuff before I buy anything else. Probably buy it eventually, though.

Not too bad at all, though the bikes update felt more of fluff.

To be honest, I'd love another big, fast island, with some nice tight mountain roads to drift and boost along.

I agree, I love the mountain roads.

I think it'd be neat if we could get snow and ice on mountain roads, maybe randomly generated, would spice things up a bit

Criterion have said somewhere on their forums that the Paradise engine wouldn't be able to handle weather effects.

Just to point out a little problem, the caption for the picture in this article reads "Electronic Arts has announced Big Shot Island for Burnout Paradise", rather than "Big Surf Island".

Fine by me - Criterion have given me a lot of free stuff to go with Burnout - stuff that I've mostly enjoyed and as such I have no problems with paying for this, assuming a reasonable price of course.

^totally agree. criterion deserves to get paid. i mean, a new hat for sackboy costs $2.99 but burnout bikes was free? and not to mention burnout only costs $20 to begin with.

were the other three packs recently announced supposed to be free? (party mode, toy cars, special cars)
