EA delays Battlefield Heroes

Battlefield Heroes is a new direction for the series but has been delayed once more by Electronic Arts.

Electronic Arts has once more delayed the release of the latest Battlefield game, Heroes. The game, which is to take a radically new direction to the previous games in the series, will be an online-only free-to-play game financed through microtransactions.

The game was originally pushed back to late 2008, but hasn't yet showed any signs of emerging from the long-running closed beta.

James Salt, senior producer on the game, told fans and beta testers the news on the official site, saying that the closed beta will be shutting down today at 6PM CET and will not be running again until next year.

According to Salt, a lot of work is going to be focused on the backend of the game and making sure that the microtransactions system and community websites are all working fine.

"You know the old saying about icebergs being 10 percent above water, and 90 percent below? Heroes is a little like that," said Salt. "There's the 10 percent game part you can see, and the hiding 90 percent is what we call the 'backend'. The backend does a lot of things. From running the website's features and looking after the items you have, to collecting the results from each Heroes game and matchmaking players into games."

"We have received lots of great feedback from our beta testers. So much so that we are now ready to enter our next phase. On Friday evening (6pm CET) we will be closing down the current Closed Beta and moving our focus to polishing the backend. So for a while there will be no closed beta available to play. We expect to re-open the beta early next year."

Good Riddance!

Now get on with it and deliver a proper sequel to BF2.

BF3 for the PC please, and please... no more dodgy 3rd person dumbed down junk.

It seems these free online FPS get delayed all the time. Same thing with Quake Live which was supposed to be out last year and still no sign of it.

Boo, at least they're not rushing it out a buggy as hell game like they did with BF2 and 2142

I wish that developers could set a timeline that they could actually meet rather than an aggressive one that keeps getting pushed back *cough*microsoft*cough*

BH:Heroes is like Battlefield for Dummies...

Every time I read about this game it sounds less and less interesting... I'm an active BF2142 clan member and we are all expecting a PROPER sequel!!! We are getting tired of playing the kick-ass BF formula on a 2006-old engine... Wouldn't been A LOT easier to re-make BF2 borrowing the CoD:4 engine from Activision? Or your own Frostbite engine for God sake? Why milk the franchise with all this micro transaction BS and Game Cube-like graphics? Why making us wait until you decide to release BF3?

So many questions...

Because there's money galore in micro transactions.

BF:H Is not an FPS or a serious game, it could be a very fun and serious clan game also, but yeh, it's a very fun game.

Now why would EA, buy the rights from a rival publisher for a game engine when they have a much better engine under their belts, i mean, CryEngine 2 works, it works just as well as the CoD4 engine does.

I do however agree, we do need a New BF, without a story, so it's just an online experience, that's what i want anyway, but i'm just a pesky gamer who wants wants wants...
