Square Enix to publish Supreme Commander 2

Supreme Commander 2 is now set to be published by Japanese publisher Square Enix.

It may seem like an odd engagement, but Japanese developer and publisher Square Enix has formally announced that it will publish Gas Powered Games' strategy follow-up, Supreme Commander 2. Giant robots are big in Japan, we guess.

The deal, which is unusual as Square Enix has traditionally stayed with Japanese RPGs whereas Gas Powered Games is a western developer with a history in the strategy genre, is a deliberate change of pace for Square Enix.

"We see great opportunities in European and North American markets, both of which are expected to be maintaining sustainable growth over these coming years," explained Yoichi Wada, Square Enix boss.

The move is part of an increased effort by Square Enix to try and penetrate western markets and genres.

"It is crucial we create alliances with proven developers such as Gas Powered Games in order to serve these significant markets better by providing products and services in tune with customer tastes," Yoichi continued.

Supreme Commander opened to great reviews when it was first released and many fans were won over by the mix of large-scale conflict and giant stompy robots. You can check our review of Supreme Commander information, as well as some of Chris Taylor's later games such as Space Siege.

No release date has yet been announced for Supreme Commander 2, but Square Enix has confirmed that it is in development as we speak.

I hated you when you announced FF13 for the Xbox,
But now i am warming up a bit if you make me another Supreme Commander....

If you knock on my door i just might let you in now Square Enix...

If Square are involved, does that mean we'll have massive robots with massive swords? I'd pay money for that :p

as excited i am of the prospect of supcom 2 i also fear now that square enix are on board that we've pc gamers have lost the last unconsolified genre we had going.

if they keep them seperate then i cant see if being an issue but supcom has one of the best interfaces ive seen in RTS in recent years and for it to be consolified would be borderlining on a criminal act.

i know supcom got a 360 port eventually, how did that work out in the end?

I don't know if I'm looking forward to it or not, I was a bit dissapointed by Supreme commander, compared to total annihalation that it was supposed to be a spiritual successor to.

Agree with bladestorm.
One thing I hated was the apparent lack of support for the game. Lots of horrible bugs when it came to patching it too.
Quote xAx 13th November 2008, 12:45
The patching problems were with THQ I believe. Constantly failed to update mine and eventually corrupted the game so I couldnt even open it

Agreed!

Does this mean we will be able to build Ragnarok units?
Quote themax 13th November 2008, 14:24
More importantly...will there be Airships now? I can't wait to be hit with a bloated, over the top CG scene whenever I tell a unit to simply..."Attack". :D

What? So you want a Power Rangers game?

I bought Supreme Commander. Fired up the first level. Everything OK. Within fifteen minutes it had slowed down to the point of complete unplayability.

Hmm, OK, thinks I; I've been building lots of stuff. My machine must not be up to it. I'll run the level again and not build anything, just to make sure. Fifteen minutes in, two frames a second, even with nothing on screen but sand.

Then Game didn't want to give me a refund. Did they ever fix these issues?

CPU intensive. GPG released like a patch a day anyway so I guess.

Loved the original Supcom but I never actually played FA.

someday I really need to pick this game up.. I wish I had more time to play games these days :P

loved the game. but its not everybody's cup of tea though. some of my buddies just prefer micro-managing more.

and i kno it sounds crazy, but if SC can be bigger and have more units, that would be even better. :) love the zooming in and out.

That would be sick. (The one from FFVIII, right?)

What exactly does publish mean? Do they have a direct role is producing the game?

Loved SupCom, in spite of the fact that all 3 sections were basically the same (sure - minor differences WRT instant hit or not weapons, that come into play when playing against mates).
THe thought of a second one excites me in all the politically correct ways.
Quote Xir 14th November 2008, 12:08
For me it's one of these games where teamplay shoud be introduced...one person micromanaging and the other battling.
In the higher levels i failed to do bothat the same time...
Quote Ending Credits 14th November 2008, 18:24
Lol, don't you mean one for micromanaging the battling?
Quote mayakovski 14th November 2008, 23:01
I just hope SC2 is more interesting than SC1 was.

SC1 in my opinion was nothing special, though I did like the use of dual monitors, otherwise it really was not much different from other RTS games.
Quote Loot3r 15th November 2008, 06:54
FA is the best RTS game iv ever played and iv played them all! :P the factions are totally unique and if you dont agree then u have never played online.
Quote mooseguy 16th November 2008, 18:18
SupCom was awesome. As long as they don't change the flavour too much (ie robots with swords), then this should be great.
