Ubisoft buys Massive Entertainment

Massive Entertainment, developer of World in Conflict, has now been purchased by Ubisoft.

Ubisoft today announced that it had bought up Massive Entertainment, the developer behind World in Conflict and the Ground Control series after the company found itself without a publisher for it's latest games.

Massive Entertainment was previously attached to Sierra, a label of the newly formed Activision Blizzard. However, when Activision gained control of Sierra it saw fit to abandon any in-progress games which it didn't think were fully exploitable. That included Ghostbusters/i], [i]Brutal Legend, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand and Massive's new World in Conflict game.

Ubisoft hasn't seen fit to disclose the exact details of the buy-out however, but it's been confirmed that Ubisoft also bought the rights to the World in Conflict series from Activision Blizzard.

Other games abandoned by Activision have found similar homes too, with 50 Cent being bought out by THQ and Atari snapping up the rights to Ghostbusters: The Game. Double Fine's Brutal Legend hasn't been so fortunate however, with rumours persisting that Activision is blocking any sale of the franchise.

If you want to know more about Massive Entertainment then you can check out our in-depth World in Conflict review for more details.

Are you glad that Ubisoft has got the rights to the series, or are you worried it may now become Imagine: My World in Conflict for the Nintendo DS? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

Shame on Activision/Blizzard for dumping the possibility of a new World in Conflict game... I thought that sold well? I know that everyone I talked to who played it thought it was ace. Oh well. I guess publishers just don't seem to want to know about good or original PC games any more. :( GraphicsWhoreGenericShooter987654321 they're quite happy to make, however... provided they can release it on just about every platform ever made.

And Ubisoft bought them? Urgh... I'll make a note not to buy WiC2, then, if Far Cry 2 was anything to go by... fun for about two hours, after that unbelievably repetitive.

Bad/Good. Massive Ent are one of the few devs who take care about their games. They havent released a duff one yet. LEts hope Ubi give em the space to get on with it.

And where the hells my WiC expansion.
