Sony has no plans to fix PSP-3000 display

Sony has announced that it has no plans to fix the interlacing issue visible on the PSP-3000's screen.

PSP fans may originally have been mightily impressed by the new PSP-3000 model, which boasts an improved microphone and new brighter, anti-glare screen - but issues have since emerged that compromise that greatness. Worse, Sony has announced it has no plans to fix the issue.

The new screen on the PSP-3000 was in part designed to address complaints of image ghosting on older PSPs, but the new display has issues of its own it seems as complaints have sprung up on the PlayStation forums (Via Kotaku) of visible scanlines and interlacing effects that can be seen during gaming and video playback.

Users on the official forums have discontent with Sony and many who bought a new PSP-3000 solely for the better screen have since exclaimed that they are not happy with their upgrade.

"On some occasions, scan lines may appear on scenes where brightness changes drastically, due to the hardware features of the new LCD device on PSP-3000," says the official Sony response.

"Installed with this new LCD device, PSP-3000 offers more natural and vibrant colors on its screen, but the scan lines have come out to be more visible as a result of improving response time to alleviate the afterimages on PSP-3000. Since this is due to hardware specification, there are no plans for a system software update concerning this issue."

So, there's no quick fix for PSP-3000 owners but the clever wording Sony used indicates a future hardware fix or new PSP model may be bought out to correct the issue. You can check out the severity of the problem in the image below, then let us know your thoughts in the forums.

cjoyce1980: Because it's only a few people complaining about it. It's not really an issue as you don't notice it unless you go looking for it.

Way to take things out of context!

Even if this means there may be another hardware change in the future that corrects this, early adopters are screeeeewed.

I used to find the ghosting was only visable on a couple of games (mainly disgaea and patapon) so i wounder how many games are greatly affected by this.

They should just use OLEDs and be done with it.

It can't be too pricey for such a small screen.. and it'd save so much space.

Sounds to me like the PSP uses (and always used) an interlaced screen/drawing system, it's just that it was hidden by the poor refresh rate of the old display. Now it's got a newer, faster and better defined screen, the interlacing shows through, to the detriment of the games.

Next hardware revision: hardware deinterlacer and progressive-scan LCD. Oh, and $200 extra.

You know I am GLAD that I didn't get the New PSP. I have the PSP-2000 Model and I was looking into getting the New One. I called GameStop and asked the personal there opinion and he told me up-front, if you have the PSP-2000 Model, then don't get the new one and after reading this article, I am glad that I listen to him and a Big thx for Bit-Tech for the article. To Sony ut's all about making Money. And I really don't see the point to What is the BIG DIFFERENCE between PSP-2000 and PSP-3000. Who cares about little add-ons. My Two Cents

P.S. Fusion

Ah interlacing... the bane of video :)

i'd happily shoot the person that came up with that video standard

sounds to me Anakha has the only possible logical conclusion instead of calling a sony out on foul play.

Quite frankly, I'm surprised by all of this bullshit fuss over such small details on an even smaller screen. Is it really the biggest issue when you're playing it against the afternoon sun?
