Islamic group debates LittleBigPlanet recall

LittleBigPlanet has been both delayed and recalled due to included quotes from the Qur'an.

An Islamic non-profit group called American Islamic Forum for Democracy has commented on Sony's recall of LittleBigPlanet and said that it doesn't see it as A Good Thing.

Sony recalled all copies of LittleBigPlanet, as well as delaying the European release of the game, after they discovered that there was two lines from the Qur'an inserted into one of the pieces of background music. Sony never received any official complaints about the game, but decided to recall it anyway in order to avoid causing offence and the issue has since flared into a serious discussion.

Speaking to Edge, M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., president of the non-profit American Islamic Forum for Democracy, said that he did not see Muslims benefitting from this kind of self-censorship.

Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted." he said.

The free market allows for expression of disfavor by simply not purchasing a game that may be offensive.

We Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Koran deeply offending," said one of the posters who originally pointed out the Muslim passages to Sony.

The fact that the music writer is a devout Muslim should highlight that at the core of this issue is not about offending ‘all Muslims,’ but only about freedom of expression and the free market,” countered Jasser.

What do you think to the recall of LittleBigPlanet? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

I played this game yesterday, it is so much fun, the wait will still be worth it.

I played the beta and was so sad it only lasted for a week or so. I was hoping it'd last until release tbh, but there we go.

Promo copies of the game (the 'unholier than thou' edition, presumably) are going for a song on ebay (see what I did there?)

Hasn't the song been out for a couple of years without upsetting anyone?

i think one of the main reasons is that Sony's Arab market is HUGE. You don't really want to piss off your biggest customers; you see this in any business. From the customers at a barber shop who come in twice as often, tip twice as much and always seem to have a barber free for them, to the billionaires who order five times as many lamborghinis as the rest.

Yeah, me too. If the Xiites in the middle east say it's fine, than there's just 1000 other muslin factions to be afraid of... Easier to do the recall, afte all we don't want a plane to be thrown in the sony main office....

I'd buy this man a beer if he were allowed to drink. Very well said IMO.

Agreed. A person of a religious background using logic and reason. Two very rare commodities in religion!

Kotaku have a quote from the guy who wrote the song saying that there's nothing wrong with using the words of their Prophet in this way as it's praise.

There's more of those than you'd think. Unfortunately - and, to be fair, this probably goes for any general group of people - the ignorant ones are always the loudest.

He definitely does make the most logical point, though. I rather wish the Islamic community as a whole would listen to advice like his more often. It could have used someone like him when the Danish editorial cartoons opened such a ridiculous can of worms a few years back. It's incidents like that one that leave content providers of all kinds on edge about offending the sensibilities of certain groups.

...it *was* Danish, right? ack. I hate having to second-guess myself.

The Muslims who are angry about this are very few and far between, and totally loony. Even in the strictest interpretations of Sharia, the only music that is allowed is singing the words of the Koran. Sony is worried about angry, racist 'murricans, not Muslims. (even though the passages aren't in English)

^^ And a box of homemade cookies to [USRF]Obiwan for pointing out what you'd *really* think would be extraordinarily obvious to people like those at Sony. Thank you.

That's possibly the real worry indeed.

Preemptive selfcensorship is no solution...

What's next? I cover up my wife because someone may be offended by her blond hair?

Sheesh...

Respect for the culture of a country WHEN IN THAT COUNTRY is due....but not preemptively HERE.

*Last year we planned a flight with a stop-over in teheran (never leaving the international part of the airport, never entering the country). All female passengers were required to wear a scarf over their heads when leaving the plane...
Okay, we would have been in a country where this is custom, so...no complaint there.
Flight got cancelled though*

looool guys clam down :) I'm Muslim and I didn't give a **** about it :) I don't mind to look at naked girls, Watch porn too :p Who care about it..... so a Quran Quote will not make a different with me or any one I know.....

I deal with people as humans, not as religion sides. Mean it don't make a difference if you are christian or don't believe on god or whatever. You still an human on my eyes. and I will talk and deal and live with you as that. That's it.

The Problem that most Muslims give a bad image to other people. ( no need to say any thing about that. every one of you know what is the image :) )

So wait: Recalling cause a fuss and releasing it would've caused a fuss

Make up your damn minds and admit that a great percentage of the muslim population wouldn't have liked it and it was a good thing they didn't release that bad content!
