Nintendo unveils DSi

The new DSi will have online functionality, a .3 megapixel camera and a SD card reader.

Nintendo has just unveiled the new DS handheld, dubbed the DSi, which comes with a whole load of improvements over the DS but manages to squeeze them all into roughly the same sized clam-shell design as the DS Lite.

Looking at specifics, the DSi looks to be ever so slightly thinner than the standard DS Lite, thanks mainly to the fact that it no longer has a slot for accepting GBA games. We'd be upset about that, but we never really used it anyway.

If you're one of those people who uses the GBA slot to make use of the Nintendo DS browser then you'll be understandably wary by the disappearance of the GBA slot obviously, but the good news is that the DSi comes with it's own internet browser built-in that Nintendo is promising users can download games through by using the new DSi Shop.

The DSi Shop looks to operate on a points system and players will be able to download 'DSiWare' through this. DSiWare is to come in four price bands - free, 200 (£1.70) points, 500 (£4.25) points or 800 (£6.80) points. Customers will get 1000 points free when they buy a DSi.

The DSi is boasting slightly bigger screens by the look of things too, though it still only has the one touch-screen. The speakers have been updated too, though Nintendo hasn't offered any specifics on how much better the sound will be.

The really big news though comes through the extra hardware - the DSi has a new .3 megapixel camera on the outside of the shell which works at a 640x480 resolution. Photos taken with the DSi can then be saved to an SD card via the new SD card slot, then moved over to the Wii Photo Channel.

The DSi is set to go on sale in Japan by the start of November and will be moving across to the rest of the world in Spring next year. Way to make us wait, Nintendo.

Excited by the DSi, or are you more interested in the Pandora? Let us know what you think in the forums.

I honestly find the Pandora much more exciting. Pandora's hardware is over the top compared to this, even tho its a little bulky.

so was doug, the new controller would plug in through the SD card slot

also, other sites are reporting two touch-screens, whereas the bit-tech article says it still only has one?

it would be cool if they release a GBA cartridge reader add-on for this as I have a bunch of GBA games and my old standard GBA is damn near impossible to play a good RPG on with its lack of a backlight (I've been meaning to grab a new handheld for ages). I wonder how long it will take people to crack the SD card reader to run emulated games off it (or homebrew apps).

M'eh - when this baby hits then DS Lite prices will take a knock and you can grab one of them instead.

Pretty pointless since you can just use a slot 1 SD card reader such as an R4.

Am I the only one who thinks the 'i' being tacked on to names these days is old and extremely cheesy?

Nope... I feel the same way. But, I guess in this case since it has a built in browser, whereas the previous model did not, the 'i' is fitting.

This looks fantastic, I may actually get a DSi!

Bit-Tech editors, just FYI, there are 2 cameras, one on the outside and one on the inside. The one on the outside is 3 megapixels, while the one on the inside is the one with .3 megapixels. Also, the screens are definitely larger (3.25" vs. 3").
