Valve, EA will not support PS3 Team Fortress 2

The PlayStation 3 version of Team Fortress 2 will have no support or updates. Ever.

Valve and Electronic Arts have announced that they have no plans to offer downloadable content of any sort for the PlayStation 3 version of Team Fortress 2, with Valve openly admitting that they have no plans to support the platform.

The issue steams from the fact that Valve has no PlayStation 3 developers at all, nor any plans to recruit any, which meant that the PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box had to be ported to the platform by an internal EA studio.

Unfortunately, EA does not want to support the PS3 port any more, according to comments made by Valve co-founder Gabe Newell.

"They're not doing ongoing development on The Orange Box for the PS3," Gabe told 1-UP.

This means that the PlayStation 3 port of the game will have no access to the Pyro, Medic or Heavy class updates which are currently out, nor any of the future additions. Nor will the game get any of the community maps to be found already on the PC. All of these updates however will be heading to the Xbox 360 in the near future.

Valve meanwhile is far to busy working on Left4Dead to concentrate on anything else for now - and good for them. There's always a need for co-op zombie shooters. Left4Dead is confirmed for the PC and Xbox 360, with Gabe also mentioning that EA is interested in porting the game to the PlayStation 3 - though we wouldn't expect any after-sale content from it, for obvious reasons.

If you've yet to play Team Fortress 2 or learn about Left4Dead then you can check out our coverage in the gaming channel - we've got a full Team Fortress 2 review and graphic analysis and a Left4Dead hands-on preview and developer interview.

Which version of The Orange Box do you own? Let us know in the forums.

Gabe is not sony's biggest fan!!! I wonder what happened to piss him off so???
Quote Singularity 25th September 2008, 10:26
Wow, another case where EA totally bones the customers...
I mean, you can't really blame Valve for it, can you?

Well, he did leave Microsoft to found Valve. I guess he still has friends there.

so the 360 is getting all or at least some of the updates the PC got at some stage is it??

EA's track record for supporting games (on any platform) is a slap in the face to the people who buy their products. They are appalling. Just bear that in mind when you pick up the next EA published game.

The above means that the 360/PC versions of the orange box will continue to receive updates and fixes, plus possibly enhancements to games like TF2, whilst PS3 owners are left to rot. Thanks EA for that... really appreciated. Another reason not to buy your games (as if I didnt have enough already with your stance on DRM)

Ive never forgiven EA for their appalling track record in BF2/2142 patches and their treatment of DICE, so I wont be buying any more of their crud.

Yes. I think Valve are going to release the whole lot when they've got it all done on the PC.

I wouldn't hold my breath x360 owners we all know valve time it could 2015 before they finish the updates.

For a few weeks EA had nothing but good PR and seemed to be on the right track but they've just gone and done what was expected of them leopards and spots....

EA have done their dash with Spore. It's the most hyped hunk of **** game I've ever played. Never again will I buy an EA title, ever. Their lack of support for TF2 a friggin AWESOME title, really doesn't surprise me. EA is a company for corporate fatcats to pimp innocent decent game ideas into the village bicycle that everyone seems to ride, and hate.

Let them all rot, hahaha consoles su...
...Ok I know when to stop, I will stop my console rants forever and beyond.

Valve just doesn't have or wont want to invest in PS3 resources. Why should they, its the only company I know that does not complain about PC gamers being all pirates. Hell I bet the PC Valve fan/gamer is the most trustful companion Valve has. I do not care what they come up with next, I will buy it without even seeing it or blinking my eyes.
Quote sotu1 25th September 2008, 12:56
is this anything to do with the fact that HL2 ran terribly on the PS3? I mean they use the same engine don't they? A multiplayer game that lags like a bitch won't sell well on the pc

I have Orange Box on the PC, but this dos suck for PS3 owners. Though I would not buy a PS3 for it's online play. The 360 has the advantage of a much larger community and support.

Honestly I want some cross platform support. I would love to be able to play my Live buddies from my PC.

Cross-platform gaming would be good. So I agree with this. :) (Although cue lots of console gamers complaining that the PC gamers are cheating by using a keyboard and mouse...)

Yeah, it'd be a complete massacre, so console players wouldn't bother

Nah, the devs would just release a patch for the console version that meant if you fired a shot within about 20ft. of a PC gamer, it was a headshot. :)
Quote pendragon 25th September 2008, 18:34
I have the PC version.. I'd never want to play this on a console. Kudos to Valve for not bothering too much with porting things left and right.
Quote TreeDude 25th September 2008, 18:48
PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii all have USB. Valve (and any other dev) can easily add support for a keyboard and mouse in their games. There is no reason to not have cross platform support.

Nothing will ever have the chance again to go from cs_mansion to what CS achieved - consoles are where the people that fed the rise of CS go now...

Here's my question...

If Valve knew they wern't going to support the PS3, why did they allow the game to be ported for it? Surely Valve has some say on how their IP is used. If they allowed the game to be released on the PS3 knowing it was never going to be supported, how is that different from EA releasing games and then never supporting them?

I like and support Valve, but I'm not sure they're as blameless in all this as people make them out to be.

You mean screaming 14 year old asshat fanbois? Consoles are a good place for them.
Quote Cadillac Ferd 25th September 2008, 22:39
Of course EA wouldn't provide continuing support for The Orange Box on the PS3! They did enough work to get the damn thing out the door in the first place, why would they trouble themselves further with updating it?

I feel bad for the PS3 owners who got shafted by EA, I've played all TOB on PC/360 and they really are missing out on a good deal of fun.

Yep... because comments like that really represent PC gamers as soooo much more mature than their console counterparts...

It always amazes me that every article involving gaming in the slightest attracts hordes of people saying how much better PC gaming is than console gaming. Get over yourselves guys, gamers are gamers, we're in this together.

True that. I'm strictly a PC gamer myself, but Cadillac Ferd has a good point. No gamer should be shafted just because they chose a particular console.

agreed, too much hatred between the two sides are being seen on the forums latey

on the other hand, I think its not just EA's decision, it's Valve's, they don't have any PS3 Developers, period. what could have pissed Gabe? I think its simple, it aint that simple to develop for the PS3 Console or they experienced HELL porting the orange box to the PS3. lol

you couldn't be more wrong, one defining factor pride, we play to win, we play to have fun. "screaming 14 year old asshat fanbois" well... they play to have fun...and because they think it's 'cool' meaning it's what everyone else is into, so then we have retards running around the server with opposing team's flag so the team they are on can't score, or chain suiciding( if friendly fire isn't enabled), hording ammo and health and reserves, teamspeak/chat spamming, and just about anything they can think of to ruin anothers experience for no apparent reason. They're are us and there are them. They just tend to flock to consoles b/c of the instant gratification aspect.

I think you may have missed my point. It wasn't aimed at console gamers per se, but rather at "The people who made CS huge". Maybe it wasn't always this way. but my expierience is that CS and CS:S is mostly populated by the obnoxious twits I mentioned and if they have indeed gone to consoles, then fine, I certaily don't want to deal with them.

So let me be clear, what I hate are obnoxious, foul mouthed, hyper-competitive 14 year old fanbois, regardless of what platform they game on.
