EA forced to close down free petrol stunt

EA's free petrol giveaway to promote Mercenaries 2 may have seemed like a good idea, but residents thought otherwise.

EA has been forced to abandon the latest marketing promotion for the multiplatform title Mercenaries 2: World in Flames after it caused traffic chaos in north London late last week.

The publisher had bought £20,000 worth of fuel to giveaway to drivers near Finsbury Park, London as part of the marketing campaign for the explosive sandbox shooter Mercenaries 2. However, with drivers detouring to take advantage of the offer the roads soon fell into gridlock and the local community and MP soon raised concerns, prompting Electronic Arts to close down the offer.

"Whilst a lucky few might have got free petrol, hundreds of residents have faced misery," said Lynne Featherstone to the BBC, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green.

"Trying to recreate Venezuelan-style fuel riots on the streets of London is completely irresponsible and downright dangerous. Hundreds of local residents have faced misery on their daily journeys this morning. They deserve an apology for being the victims of such an ill thought-out media stunt."

Opinion seems to have been divided though as other customers have praised the idea. Prince Davis, who queued for a 15 minutes to get a share of the free fuel, said: "This is a genius idea, whoever thought of this should be promoted I'll definitely be buying the game, you're never too old to play computer games."

Mercenaries 2 launched on Friday last week and casts players as for-hire soldiers operating in Venezuela. We'll have a full review up tomorrow, but until then you can check out our preview or tell us your thoughts in the forums.

Marketing guy: "Ohhh noooes! Unfortunately, our random stunt has been given national news coverage by the BBC. How annoying, we didn't want all this attention for our game. Now all these sucky people are going to go any buy it! Damn our ill thought out idea!"

What did they think was going to happen when they did this. As far as I can see this was just a stunt to get news coverage.

sound's like the someone is inline for a promotion, 20k pounds for that much attention is a bargain.

I'm sure the marketing team responsible will be very happy to do so once the fat bonus cheque has cleared.

Bargain? 18K will get you a 30 sec ad' on ITV2 reapeated daily for a week 'non primetime'....

It's bubbly, drugs and hoes all round the Ad Agency after that....

Taking it to the next level I hear that for Far Cry 2 trendy ad types will be handing out free flame throwers in hyde park... check it on facebook

You have to appreciate the genius behind the stunt.

Probably the cheapest coverage in recent years.

If the gas was 50% off and wasn't part of a promo the streets would of been packed.

You can see how desperate our European part of the fuel consuming population is. If it actual was Venezuela pricing (about 12 dollar cents a gallon) there would be a waiting line from London to Glasgow. I pay 1,59 euro for a liter E95 fuel, including 80 eurocent tax. If i would live next to the border of Germany or Belgium I would buy my gasoline over there.

for the free petrol. i'd be willing to drive there from Southampton, a day trip in London, get the game (not all that bad, from the trailers) and a tank full of petrol.

They should have stuck vouchers for £40 of petrol in random Merc 2 cases, the games would have flown off the shelves.

Agreed, I'd buy it, £40 of fuel lasts me about a month, the way I drive.

I don't even remember what game it was. Sure about the success of the marketing?
