Rumour: Gearbox developing Halo 4

Rumour: Gearbox developing Halo 4

Gearbox Software is rumoured to be making a new Halo game for the next model of the Xbox.

Rumour. Strictly a rumour for now, but still a very juicy one which goes back a long way to the beginning of this year when Gearbox Software announced that they were working on a super secret and unannounced title. It was big, they said. Really, really big.

All very well and interesting stuff, until everyone forgot about it. Everyone that is, except for the Official Xbox Magazine who went ahead and did some investigating and heard from inside sources that the new project was...Halo 4.

According to these anonymous sources and their info and speculation, Gearbox has been working on Halo 4 since February under Microsoft's order and the plan is to release the game as a launch title for the new Xbox 720 model, the successor to the Xbox 360.

Bungie meanwhile has stated quite emphatically that it has no interest in creating more and more Halo games for the rest of time. Thus, with Microsoft retaining the license to future Halo titles and Gearbox having a history of making both excellent games of their own and top quality expansion packs like Half-Life: Opposing Force, the rumours does seem quite possible.

On top of all that, the top brass at Gearbox is apparently involved in the project with company head Randy Pitchford stepping in as director to the secret game, though nobody at Gearbox has yet directly confirmed or refuted the rumour.

What do you think? Do you buy into the gossip, or is Microsoft going to let Halo die? Let us know what you think in the forums.

That's only 4 years away, which would be enough time for a fairly polished launch title, don't you think?

2012 will probably be about the time I get an HDTV and a this-gen console, TBH.

I'd presume there's a focus group asking random people what their favourite angle is.

I rather enjoyed all three Halo games and still play Halo 1 and 3 online, lots of fun. Here's hoping the next one will have an even better MP :)

Seems possible to me. In 4 years we will all be less fed up with Halo so a new incarnation would be timely in my opinion. I do hope that if they chose to take a new story line they at least include a part there were they let you know whatever happened to the chief after Halo 3. Don't wanna leave him floating there in limbo.

Gearbox co-developed the original Halo with Bungie. Maybe this means the next Halo game will be more like the original. I liked the first one because the story was simple, but enough to grab you. Halo 2 had too much. Way too many long cut scenes of useless story that wasn't even interesting. I have not played the single player for Halo 3 so I cannot comment on that.

At least we know it will remain true to Halo fans.

Well, I post around the Gearbox forums all the time, and I haven't heard anything like this. This must be VERY speculative if it hasn't even reached the home base.

The thing that started this rumor was a post by one of the Gearbox execs (I think it was either the president or studio head) on the Gearbox forums a very, very, long time again. I guess since OXM decided to mention it months after the fact it's resurfacing but yeah, if you weren't on the Gearbox forums a while ago when this all started then I guess you missed seeing it firsthand.

DUH, why even state the obvious. In the case of halo, considering the mammoth hype and that better shooters are on the market, a strong factual case can be made it is indeed by far, the most overrated game series ever. A Large number of gamers have this view, Halo just happened to capatilize on being the first good xbox game in an era when Console shooters were few and far between and online play was in its infancy on the consoles, PC's were already way ahead of the curve once again here. The hype is only rivaled by GTA game, but is not even the best shooter by a long shot even just in the same year it gets released.

To this day, I still haven't played a FPS that did vehicles as well as Halo does them, usually in shooters, the vehicle sections are absolute shite, in Halo they were the best bits of the game. That was why it was so well recieved, co-op + excellent vehicles made a lot of people fall in love.

They should call the next xbox the Xbox 420 :P
