64 percent of gamers gave up on Wii Fit

A massive 64 percent of people who bought Wii Fit almost instantly gave up on using it for personal fitness.

Wii Fit made a pretty big impact when it launched earlier this year and has certainly helped generate an awful lot more publicity and sales for Nintendo's diminutive console, but the real question on many peoples minds is "Will it really help me get thin?"

The answer is, of course, yes - provided you use it regularly. It's that last little clause which seems to be the problem for most people though as a recent Japanese poll showed that a huge 64 percent of gamers who bought the game gave up on it almost immediately.

In Japan Wii Fit has been around for a little bit longer than in the rest of the world and launched at the end of last year. Japanese website IT Media though wanted to know just how many people were still gaming on regularly on the balance board.

What they found was both disappointing and unsurprising - 64 percent of people stopped using Wii Fit almost immediately after buying it. Only 22 percent of people used the game everyday and faithfully recorded their progress, while the remaining 12 percent were equally split between weekly use and playing every two or three days.

It isn't all that surprising when you get down to it - even we'd have to admit that we guiltily fall into that 64 percent really - but it's interesting to question whether it's a fault of the game design, or just a failing of the customer. Which do you think? Do you have an exercise plan of your own? Let us know in the forums.

it's like the membership to the gym. it's a good intention but very few people stick to it. those who do reap the benefits. those who dont...well they just blew their cash.

Is this not generally indicative of the Wii in general?
From what I've heard, people tend to play it quite a bit when they first get one, then after that it doesn't get used until they get reminded that they have it, or have a few friends over.

I'd be more interested in the Wii Fit if it weren't for what I want to achieve. It doesn't seem to cater to my goals what so ever, having tried a friends out.

This really doesn't surprise me... If there was a MUCH wider range of activities.. even downloadable ones, people wouldn't get bored of it so quickly.

This is news why? Half console games around you could say this about.

I think because the game was designed with regular use in mind.

It's exactly like Brain Training, really.. most people will play it a few times and then leave and never come back because they've unlocked everything and played all the activities/minigames they like most to death.

I joined a gym at the beginning of June and lots 6 kilograms in the month, I would very impressed if someone lost 6 kilograms using a wii. I go 6 days a week for average 1:30 hours.

True.. but I don't think Nintendo want a lot of hate for making loads of people lose weight FAR too quickly.. For a lot of people (mostly those who really need to lose it) 6kg is far too much to lose in a month, that's unhealthy.

What do you expect? Ultimately it's only a game. I imagine that if you did play Wii Fit for 1.5 hours a day, 6 days a week then the results would be noticeable but it'd get boring... much like the gym tbh!

I've only played this game 3 or 4 times since buying it at launch... give me mario kart any day!

its all hype, the whole wii thing, anyone that sees it wants it and once they have it they don't use it anymore. Its a real consumer product. Just like the Iphone. Everyone wants it and when you use it, you cant do **** with it.

Yep, completely agree.

I got the Wii back when it first hit the UK shops. Wow, neat, says I. After a week I was just plain bored with it. It's not a console for serious gamers -- it's a novelty or party piece and that's about the limitation of it. Yes, it has a fairly nifty UI but even that has become quite common now, with Sony looking to bring out their own equivilant and I'm sure so are M$ (or have they? not sure..)

I sold my Wii 2 weeks after I got it for more than I bought it for.. So I guess there's was some good to come out of it :)

I actually put my Wii Fit down shortly after I got it because it was right before my vacation and wedding. I was far too busy to be playing games and now that I'm back I fully intend to get back on it. I used to work out in the field but now I'm in an office and gaining weight lol.

Wii Fit, just like a gym membership is always going to get boring at some point. Whereas a proper sport where there are skills to learn is much more likley to be continue being interesting. For me Wii Fit just wouldn't work. I need some sort of risk as an incentive to work/train harder. I go Kayking and depending on where you are paddeling you need to work and learn the sport to aviod drowning. Same with rugby you need to learn how to aviod being smashed which also means you have to become faster and build up the right frame to take hits.

So in short I think i could compare Wii Fit to running, it's good for you but boring as ****.

I agree. It's just a gimmick, and with the way Nintendo markets it more and more people are gonna be sold on the false premise of getting fit quick, only to be let down miserably. It'd be wrong of me to call the Wii a gimmick as well, but looking past the few decent games on it all I see is shovelware this and shovelware that... if Nintendo aren't careful the Wii is definately headed in that direction. Just makes me glad I never ended up getting one because I know it'd just sit there eating dust until the next good first-party game comes along :(
MiNiMaL_FuSS 4th July 2008, 23:33 Quote
its infact more successful than gym membership...th average gym only actually sees 10-20% of people with a full years membership after 3months!

id think most games can beat the 64% have never used again. Played till beaten then put on scrap heap and never played again.

halo 3 ( lack of content / players)
gta 4 ( no real reason to repeat it )
wii sports ( boring boring boring just so bleeding boring )

top my list of games never played again

I think its a huge success if only a handful of people got healthier by using it. *cheer cheer*

The general thing with my Wii is that there wasn't enough there to keep me interested, I've had two Wiis and got rid of them within three months, I'll stick to my 360 and will get a PS3.

Nintendo should make a game which combined the Wiimote with the WiiFit balance board. That way you have another input control in addition to the Wiimote itself. Would be interesting. That way the balance board gets more life.
supermonkey 6th July 2008, 04:30 Quote
I'm guessing that the large number of Wii Fit balance boards that go unused are collecting dust next to the South Beach Diet, Atkins, and (Insert Fad Diet Here) books. Just don't look under the bed, you might see a bunch of Ab Rocker, SoloFlex, and Uber-6-pack-get-the-ladies muscle builders that Chuck Norris sells on late night TV.

People love fad diets, and they'll buy anything that they think will give them a sexy body overnight. If they don't see results in the first day, they give up. I don't think is really Nintendo's fault at all, and I don't think it says anything negative about the Wii, either. Even if there were 100 awesome, interactive, hardcore-gamer-certified, super fun games priced at $2 each, people would still give up because staying in shape takes discipline. Unfortunately, the majority of humanity is still looking for that easy fix that takes off the weight overnight without any real work.

Want to see people lose weight? Connect the television to a treadmill and see how far they're willing to go to get their fix of Entertainment Tonight!

Or maybe I'm just pessimistic.

Bit like the Wii itself then, eh? :P

Wii-like controllers are on the way for the PC, so we'll soon be able to have the best of both worlds. I'm just thinking of the possibilities of a game like the Force Unleashed with a Wii controller for the lightsaber -- coupled with something like the Emotiv Epoc or OCZ NIA to control the Force powers with your mind.

I bought a Wii for my family to have a laugh on, and we bought quite a few games since but it doesn't get played much nowadays. Once the novelty of the control method has worn off, the weakness of alot of games shines through. The only game my daughter has gone back to alot is Wii Sports, and that's only because she can kick my arse on most of the games!
johnnyboy700 7th July 2008, 10:50 Quote
I bought the Wii Fit for the novelty factor, not to get fit, I already go to the gym often enough to make the Wii a waste of time for this purpose. The balance games are the most fun, it works best at a family get together or if you want to keep a group of kids (of all ages) amused for a while.
I reckon the strength execises are pointless as you are supposed to follow the onscreen action but some of the actions require you to be looking away from the screen so I don't see how you can keep up with the instructor. Oh and has anyone unlocked the balance game where you have to sit on the balance board and your Mii levitates arounds a candle? Bloody impossible in my opinion!
