Blizzard has one more unannounced game

Could Blizzard be working on Starcraft: Ghost? It's unlikely, but possible...

If you've been sat under a rock this last week then you may have missed out on the fact that Blizzard announced Diablo 3 over the weekend, timing the announcement to coincide with the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational event in Paris.

But it seems that Diablo 3 isn't the only secret that Blizzard has been hiding these last few years...

OnlineWelten got a chance to sit down with Blizzard's Rob Pardo at the invitational and nagged him on a few issues, one of which was whether or not Blizzard still had any unannounced games in development.

The answer; a coy yes.

According to Pardo, Blizzard still has one as-yet-unannounced project in development which is being worked on by a team seperate to both Starcraft II and Diablo 3.

There's precious little information than that going around at the moment, though rumours hint that this could be Blizzard's supposed World of Warcraft successor or sequel for next-gen system. Personally, we've got out fingers crossed for Starcraft: Ghost though.

Which game would you want Blizzard to work on? Something old, or utterly new? Let us know in the forums.

World of Diablo! A MMORPG that goes kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, RSI.

Starcraft Ghost didn't look too exciting, even a few years ago. I want a new game, hopefully not related to the Lost Vikings...

Or maybe a console game? I would kill for a decent Blizzard Wii game.
Bladestorm 2nd July 2008, 10:52 Quote
Call me cynical but I still think World of Starcraft is sort of a done deal eventually, having it follow up on starcraft II (which will bring the franchise to a whole new generation of gamers and some of those who missed it the first time, plus hopefully reminding those who did play the first time around how good it was) makes sense. Given how long MMORPG's take to make, it wouldn't be too surprising if they'd started on it already.
C0nKer 2nd July 2008, 10:53 Quote
Yeah. I wonder why Blizzard doesn't make console games. Compared to other developers, they're rather modest, not the ones pushing for uber PC hardware in their games. The only thing I see hampering them from making console games is no mouse and keyboard. Is that a big enough reason?

StarCraft : Ghost FTW. Using Wii remote for nuclear strike.
BentAnat 2nd July 2008, 11:05 Quote
I am kinda hoping for SC:Ghost. I'm not one to enjoy MMORPG's, so maybe that explains it... plus, i LOVE my X360 - so they better bring it there...
r4tch3t 2nd July 2008, 11:58 Quote
They don't do consoles because that would take up valuable development time that is spent making the games we enjoy so much. Would you like StarCraft II if it was buggy as hell?
As for the game, I am hoping for something from StarCraft (Ghost), or Diablo (Might be interested in a WOD), or WarCraft (Warcraft 4). Or even something entirely new.

Diablo 3 is/was no secret.. I've known it was in development for years.

World of Starcraft would make sense, but I'll be happy with World of Lost Vikings.

Really? Then why didn't you tell me? D:

I'm guessing another MMO as well, world of starcraft. Probably not starcraft ghost since the reiterated in France the other day that they're not interested in consoles. I don't really like MMO's (mainly because I can't stand the sub fee), but it has to be acknowledged that Blizzard are best in the business and they would have learnt a lot from making WoW. Also a decent sci fi based MMO would be cool.
Lost Vikings was my favourite game when I was a kid, so something related to that franchise would make me happy too.

Well, if you'd have asked....

Besides, I'd forgotten.. but I remember reading a preview/interview about it, years back.

blizzard should never touch consoles, They are only pc developer who constantly delivers the goods. Warcraft 4 would be nice but not likely till after wrath of hte lich king.

Starcraft 2 has long since been announced.

world of starcraft wont ever be released till wow dies off.

mmos and subfee. Wow is £8 a month that buys me 2 pints of beer and a bag of chrisps at the local pub ( just ) woopeewoo lol or i can have 20 + hrs of gameplay a week more if you are raiding.

I.. I really hope it's not Starcraft Ghost.

I love the fan renders of Nova's bum, but by god, the game would probably suck, and all the appeal of her bum would be lost :(

There's been some comments on new franchises lately, I'm surprised that everyone is stuck on the old brands and not even mentioning the possibility of a whole new thing?

Quote from (at the bottom of the page):
"What I will say, though, is that the idea of a new franchise is very intriguing to employees of the company. Are we ever going to release a new one? I would absolutely say we will at some point. I just don’t know when that day will be quite yet." - Paul Sams, chief operating officer, Blizzard Entertainment

Also, it's been posted before that Blizzard has been looking for new people for a "next gen MMO", and it's mentioned in the interview, (tho Rob Pardo doesn't directly say it) that they are working on one, with a separate development team. Find it very hard to consider it a rumor based (as it's been said to be in the news post) on having seen the adds for new jobs for that and that it's been admitted in the interview. Of course with Blizzard, you can never be 100% sure no matter what they say =]

Yes it's true they have shown that they really put their IP to good use, sequel after sequel. But at some point it will get back at them and I would be very surprised if they weren't aware of that. At least for Warcraft, there is no more lore left after WotLK comes out, so the next expansion will be about something that we don't know about yet, at all.
MrMonroe 2nd July 2008, 15:08 Quote
Or, maybe, you know...

A new goddamn IP for once.

But hey, why bother trying something new when you can crap out remakes and make millions?

World of Warcraft 2?

Blizzard will never make console games because 6 months after release, no one remembers them. That's not how Blizzard rolls. All of their bnet games are still played nowadays, even (for some) 10 years later

I have a feeling it's going to be World of Starcraft or something along those lines, but Warcraft IV would make a lot of sens. The third one is still popular but it is now 6 years old
Vash-HT 2nd July 2008, 20:25 Quote
Maybe they'll release Warcraft: Lord of the Clans, I was actually excited for that game back in the day and they canceled it. Oh well it would weird if they announced Warcraft 4, they would be working on sequels for everything at one.

WoW came only two years after W3. There was no way they would have made a new Warcraft two years after the third one and a year after its expansion
HatriX 2nd July 2008, 20:52 Quote
Well, StarCraft is 10 years old, Diablo - 8 and Warcraft - 6. WoW doesn't really count as a sequel to the last, simply because it's not a RTS. Warcraft IV might just make sense.

Truth to be told though, I'd play whatever they make, simply because THEY made it.

I'll say World of Warcraft 2. However, it would be easily 2+ years down the road.
LordPyrinc 2nd July 2008, 22:11 Quote
First "Warcraft", then "Starcraft", next up "Beercraft"!! Terrans convert the command center into a brewry; instead of mining crystals and gas, you harvest barley and hops; beer delivery trucks replace tanks; research options include better taste and less filling; no more Zerg or Protoss battles, they are replaced by bar room brawls.

Seriously though, I love Blizzard. I've spent more hours playing Warcraft II and III, Diablo, Starcraft, Diablo II, and Diablo II LOD than all other games combined over the last 10+ years. I can't wait to see what they have in the works.

I know! I know!

It'll be a "World of Diablocraft a MMORTS" that looks like "kingdom under fire" but in space ! Wouldn't that be fun?

I am falling out of my seat exstatic they finally announced Diablo 3! However, the graphics look to be nice but average. I wish that Blizzard for once would try pushing the graphics envelop in their games. They focus on middle of the road graphics quality, I suppose so that they can grab the largest possible player base. Most of the highly anticipated PC games released these days have uber graphic quality, almost photo-realism. I know Blizzards has an incredibly long development cycle for their games so maybe that isn't really practical for them -- by the time they actually release their games graphics technology has usually progressed three generations from the time they started the games development.

Anyway I'm salivating for the release date of Diablo 3 -- 2009 maybe?
dr-strangelove 3rd July 2008, 01:23 Quote
Im really hoping that its Warcraft 4 but I don't think it's likely since they've got World of Warcraft and there's no way they could get the plots to sync, or else they'd just have to avoid changing anything and that'd make a crap story/game. Personally I hope it's something completely new, Blizzard hasn't made a bad game yet and if anyone can create a killer title it's them.

That'd be bad cos it'd take the focus off making a really cool game and I think that's what makes Blizzard's games stand out. I can't remember a single Blizzard game that could be considered 'cutting-edge' in terms of graphics but all of their games are fun and have good stories nontheless.
Amon 3rd July 2008, 03:22 Quote
My bets are on either:
-a console port of one of their in-development or existing titles
-a partnership with another studio, leasing out their skilled cinematic talent in the same manner Squaresoft was commissioned for The Animatrix
-an expansion pack to Starcraft II, developed in parallel with the game
diasam 3rd July 2008, 04:12 Quote
Ok so let's look at it this way:

Releases in order of date: Starcraft -> Diablo 2 -> Warcraft 3

Let's see the announcements in order of date: Starcraft 2 -> Diablo 3 -> ????

My guess is Warcraft 4. Or Blizzard is making a new franchise because they know that people don't like it when companies keep milking off their old franchises by making sequels (even if they're good).
Langer 3rd July 2008, 04:20 Quote
It should be a whole new series, that would do Blizzard best... they should let the classics reign and bring us a new EPIC that will steal away another two years(minimum) of our lives - like diablo did all those years ago (and for heavens sake not in the manner that warcrack is doing now)
It had best not be another mmo, the genre that imho is killing the PC Game "fun-factor" (whats the point of a game that has no end?)
Sathy 3rd July 2008, 14:03 Quote
Hm...I wonder how many have actually watched the interview and read gamasutra? Lets see...R.Pardo admits they have another developement crew for another project, also they've been looking for people to work on an MMO (which isn't WoW) and they've talked about wanting to find a new franchise....Is it really that hard to connect the dots? =]

About the discussion of WoW and Warcraft 3, with WotLK WoW will be reaching the end of story line told in WC3: The Frozen Throne. After that, Blizzard has at least one more Expansion planned for WoW. Whether they decide to use the material planned for that expansion for a new Warcraft-the-real-time-clicker remains to be seen. Either way, unless something dramatic happens to the WoW community for some unknown reason, the Warcraft lore would seem to be focused on WoW for the time being. Anything is possible with Blizzards rather flawless fell for focusing and timing.

Warcraft 4? Why would they make two strategy games to be released so close to each other? Doesn't make sense, especially if you note the point of their games having really long lifespans - as previously mentioned in the comments.

Amon I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but please have a look around mate, making an expansion pack while the original is still in the works? That's got to be the best/worst I've heard on any discussion over this topic, anywhere. Honestly.
I guess you aren't aware of the Warcraft movie?
rollo 3rd July 2008, 17:31 Quote
it wont be a console game that much can be taken as a gaurentee. As ms or sony would have to guarentee the servers would allow mods and be up for the next 10 years. ( diablo 1 2 ) Warcraft 2 3 are both still played extensively online.

warcraft 4 would be good to see. Dout we would see it till 2010 though

nukeman8 16th October 2008, 10:50 Quote
no its classed as an action role playing game (arpg)
differences are small
MMO: usually one big world or several severs that everyone plays in.
RPG: usually you create a game for yourself and maybe a few others to play in.
StephenK 13th November 2008, 13:16 Quote
World of Diablo would be very cool indeed :)

First RTS i played was Warcraft 1
Didn't like 3 much to be honest so I never checked out WoW.

Loved the Diablo games very much though, always hoped thay'd make a Diablo MMO
