Microsoft has pledged that it will never cancel any game it announces, for better or worse.
Almost as a response to Sony cancelling development on PlayStation 3 games
Eight Days and
The Getaway PS3, Microsoft has pledged that it will never cancel any game it announces.
The comments came from Business Development Manager Peter Zetterberg as part of an interview with
GI.biz in which Zetterberg admitted that although some games are announced too early, Microsoft will never cancel any game it announces.
"
Maybe we sometimes announce [games] earlier than we should, but we stick with them, we have our resources team work with them as much as we can," said Zetterberg.
Zetterberg said he sees around 600 game concepts pitched to him every year, ranging from ideas scrawled on napkins to full video presentations. Of those presentations, only about 30 go beyond that stage and into discussion. That 30 is then narrowed to 5 games that might get greenlighted.
"
There's a reason why Microsoft hasn't been that successful in the past on the continent, because they sit in Redmond and it's hard to understand how to make 15 games for a smaller European market," Zetterberg said.
"
We've always moved on a global basis and this means that sometimes we have missed out on the smaller things. If you look at World of Goo or Crayon Physics, these can be easily overlooked by a large corporation that thinks global."
Can you think of a recently cancelled Microsoft game? Have you ever had an idea for a game yourself? Let us know in
the forums.

4 Year olds?
Eh?! They're just promising their customers that they will never announce a game only to have it subsequently cancelled.
I don't see what's childish about that. It's quite good of them, if they can keep the promise.
The only reason it probably is outsold is because its a cheaper blue ray player with a buildin gameconsole.
Aye, I've got a mate who only uses his PS3 for Blu-Rays.. I've never seen him play a PS3 game.
They can get back to me when they make a console that isn't a fire hazard.
The 360 already has a strong user base. PS3 does not. Also the money is actually made by the software sales. In that regard MS is KILLING Sony.
MS lost 1billion in the last year in fines alone, And another £1billion fixing the 360
sony probably lost the same amount in diffrent places.
id love to see profit predictions for both companys from just the 360 and ps3
id be amased if either is in profit
You either have a very poor grasp of English or you're an idiot.
Point? Yeah, and soon the PS3 will have a larger install base, it has outsold the 360 everywhere in the same time frame, and even in its own country, no matter how you spin it, the 360 will be third again this gen, they predict by 09, the PS3 will be past the 360. Easy to get a larger install base when you have a year start, that is the only thing MS had going for them. Despite being more expensive, and having competition (360 had none its first year), it has outsold it.
360 fanboys are a sad lot, first they were bragging how the 360 was doing so well, now the PS3 is turniong the tide, they fall back on the software sales excuse, the only reason that is the case for NOW, is the year head start, that will also change as Sony surpasses MS and the red ring of death console.
Either way this gay "I'm better than you, nanana" attitude from MS will do them no favours.
In all seriousness, it is about content, of which the PS3 has very little that is original or exclusive. (unless you count blu-ray movies)
Now, as this regards to the actual article, this doesn't really indicate that they will produce better games, it just indicates that they won't ever back down. Why they would make a promise like this I don't know... if a game dies stillborn why waste time and money shipping it and dealing with customer complaints?
Oh no, not again.
I'm annoyed with fanboys, but I'm also annoyed with anti-fanboys. Shut the **** up and ignore it.
That is your opinion, the people buying more PS3's then 360's disagree. The Ps3 lineup this year looks much stronger then the 360.
I just realised how hipocritical that was...
Sorry...
PS3 Fanboys are a sad lot when they cant realize the console sales mean nothing when no one is buying the games... I don't have either a PS3 or 360. I am a PC gamer, so I have no bias towards either. But in all honestly, I would say 40% of the PS3's sold we sold because of blue ray capabilities. I know in the store I worked in at the time of release, there was no one beating down our door for them as a gaming console, all the PS3s we sold were sold from our home theater department as Blu-ray players with gaming capabilities.
I just don't see that many games for the PS3, at least none that are exclusive. Any good looking game that the PS3 has, most of them are available on the 360 as well. There is just no real advantage to the PS3 in my opinion.
Again PS3 sales are more about the Blue-Ray player than anything. Why would you get a PS3? The games? All the great games on the PS3 are on the 360 as well, and generally play better on the 360 because of the huge online community. PS3 does not have an exclusive killer app like the 360 does. Whether you personally like Halo or not, no one can deny the game sells unbelievably well.
Maybe things will turn around when FFXIII rolls in. Of coarse the point is moot, Nintendo is #1 right now.
And don't imply I am a fan boy, I don't own any of the next gen consoles. I have my PC, PS2, GC, and DS.
LOL, load of BS, the vast majority of people barely know what Blu-Ray is or cares, it will be 5 years before it becomes mainstream. People know the playstation as a gaming system and that is why the majority are buying it. Most people are not tech saavy, nor are on top of the latest in it,.
Have any facts to back up that bogus claim? Blu-ray is not selling well, most people are happy with DVD for the forseeable future.
Proof?
The only reason 360 game sales are higher are because of the year start and larger install base, many PS3 games have sold in the millions, learn the facts. Blu-Ray sales are less then 1%, so no, most people are buying the PS3 as a gsming system. If no ome was buying games game companies would not make games for it anymore, let alone exclusives. That is a BS argument spread by 360 fanboys. The software sales will overtakle the 360 as the console install base gets larger.
I have both PS3 AND 360.... which do I play on the most .... the 360, because the online side is more polished and complete than on the PS3.
I'm a "social" gamer and couldn't care less about these "my console's better than yours" arguments that appear on EVERY thread on the net where a site dares to do a comparison between the consoles.
I just wish I could get news and commentary without all the flame wars
There are exclusives, and exclusives. MGS4? An exclusive. Ninja Gaiden Sigma? Not an exclusive. It's essentially a port of the earlier game.
Likewise, there are 35+ exclusives, but when many of those are games that are far off or PSN type things then it doesn't really count for much. By that meter you could count every single XBL game as an exclusive.
It can be argued that people don't care about Blue-Ray. But most people know what it is. You can't walk into any major electronics store without seeing a Blue-Ray kiosk (or 3, which is what my local Best Buy has).
all i am saying is there is no reason to get a PS3 if all the bast games are on the 360 and the 360 is a cheaper console. The choice is easy to make even for a non-tech savy person.
I know my Wii and my 360 love each other to bits, I swear they share a disc at night when I'm a sleep they're a dirty couple really
I'm just trying to prove to him that the PS3 has many exclusive titles to offer for its first year and 7 months of life (sure some of them weren't blow-me-away titles, but they were still good exclusives).
OK First of I worked at an electronics store. I know exactly what people came to buy and why. When working in Home Electronics and someone comes in to buy a big screen HD TV and they see a Blu-Ray movie playing on one, they ask questions that a sales person is more then happy to answer. Its not that people came asking about the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player. They were told it was a B;u-Ray player when looking at HD TVs.
Secondly a ONE year lead would not make a difference of 200% sales numbers from the PS3 to the 360...
Source: http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly.php
Total Game Sales
360: 128,152,022
PS3: 56,835,727
WIi: 134,256,463
Now if release date has so much to do with sales... why isn't the Wii lagging behind?
I figured I should share my opinions on this....
You say all the best games are on 360 and its an easy choice. Well, I guess there are many people who are totally stupid then huh?
Up until the last 2 weeks when the sales slowed down for PS3 (many are saying its because of the MGS4 Bundle or whatever.) It has been outselling the 360 EVERY WEEK this year World Wide by on average 50K - 70K. Even with the price drop for 360 it only improved sales by maybe 10K - 15K.
Sounds like people dont care if the 360 is cheaper.
Also for those who say no one buys PS3 games well how about this: Approximately 1/3 of PS3 owners bought GTA4.
Remember when the gap between the total sales of 360 and PS3 was like 9 million? Well, now its just under 6 million.
wheres my info from? most accurate sales tracking site: www.vgchartz.com
have fun with the fanboy war!!!!!!!
My only real question is this: Why is PS3 dogged-on so much for not having 'enough' exclusives when I can't count hardly any 360 exclusives?
It's also unfair to say that games like Saints Row or Dead Rising (for example) are true exclusives because we all know that they would've come to the PS3 (either at 360-launch / sooner or later) had both systems been made available at the time. Again, it's all opinion-based and nobody is 100% correct on most things.
I guess my question could be this: How many Sony-published games debuted the first 1st year and 7 months since its debut? Now, how many MS-published games debuted in that same time-frame?
xBox: £190
PS3: £289
My understanding is that many games are available for both units so since the xbox is cheaper, has a larger install base and a year or two head start, meaning that the second had market for games is much larger thus bringing down the price of games further. All that adds up to a much cheaper games console.
The PS3 however has more whistles so if you want a more rounded machine, quieter and with a growing catalog of games the PS3 is a better entertainment system.
I'm considering getting one but at the moment i'm not sure if i'll mainly use it for games, bung linux on it and use it for home entertainment or whether either units would just sit there gathering dust while i play TF2 on the pc and watch telly on a mythbox.
Why is the PS3 dogged so much? Hmmm lets think....
Why the **** is it so expensive? Because Sony shat on the gamers and said let's push this thing as blu-ray player and a cell-chip seller. Neither have truly panned out well. Blu-Ray will be known as an overpriced stop-gap format, and Sony already sold their cell factory.
Ready to enter the HD Gaming Era? Not with a PS3, you can't game on it in HD without EXTRA CABLES! The most expensive console on the market, that was marketed as an hd machine has no hd cables? You can say you can get the HDMI cables for cheap, but what about component, a large portion of the hd market has a hdtv without an hdmi port. Even then, if the cables are so cheap why are they not included? WTF!
What is an exclusive really? Look at how many games come out weeks to months earlier for the 360. We're coming up on how many true years of development yet devs still can't seem to get the PS3 down. It costs them more money to make a game for a smaller audience, and most times that mean the PS3 user, who paid more money for their console gets the shaft, instead of Sony. So far for my two PS3s (one is pretty much a dedicated blu-ray) I own 4 count em' 4 games. That includes MGS4, which so far is a let down on multiple levels.
On the other hand I bought 5 games for my 360 on LAUNCH. Exclusives (I count **** that is also on PC because to have a PC capable of running these games at a good clip with decent res is about 1200, with another 400 every 6 months for a new gfx card) Kameo, PDZ, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Forza 2, PGR 3, PGR 4, Condemned, Ninja Gaiden 2, Dead Rising, Ghost Recon AW, Prey, Gears of War. Just to name a few. If you want to count games that come out more than 2 months in advance the list grows. If I own both consoles and a new game drops 1-2 months before the other, why would I wait, especially when the PS3 version is usually not as good?
Yes the 360s online is better, and if that means 5 lousy freaking I can get a whole gallon of gas for that dollars, than so be it. I know I can fire up a game of call of duty 2 and play it online, even though it was a launch title. Not to mention you can get 13 months for 39 dollars if you just look for it.
The PS3 also gets dogged because it came out a year later and so far has yet to show a clear technological edge over the 360 in the gaming dept. MGS4 doesn't look that hot, IMHO Gears of War is far more detailed, so that means yes that UT3 on the PS3 is more detailed as well. For the extra year wait and the extra money up front I as a PS3 owner should have more to show in the gaming dept. shouldn't I?
How bout rumble you want rumble? Buy our new overpriced we weren't smart enough to settle with immersion controller with rumble. Instead of pricing this at a low mark-up because we messed up, we're going to try and bleed every penny out of you. And the six-axis part still sucks. So next gen Sony.
What's that you say, your PS3 is farther than 4 feet from your cat-5e jack... too bad we skimped on that too. But you get a card reader (why?).
Where's Home? Achievements, nope.
So let's re-work that faulty math. You didn't buy a PS3 or 360 yesterday, you got them before the MGS4 bundle. You got a 40gb model for 399 and a 20gb 360. So the PS3 was already 50 dollars more, but we're going to ignore that because you want the 14 months of live. Okay, so far it looks like the PS3 has a 20 gb advantage, but does it really? How quickly will that extra space go bye-bye when installs are increasing in size with MGS4 (the it game for the PS3) coming in at a giaint 8 gigs, or 20 percent of your storage. Want rumble, add another 54 dollars. Want a good hdmi cable the same day, look to shell out at least 20 dollars at your local store. Want a headset to chat online? Add in 20 more bucks. So far I'm looking at spending at least a good hundred extra on that PS3 to make it even with the 360.
The PS3 has continued to be a let down for everything that it promised and it will continue to get dogged for it. I own two and will dog it because Sony's consumers deserve better.
All companies say stuff like that. Seriously. Go back and look at some of the stuff Sony has said (most recently the "MS has knocked themselves out of the fight" by releasing their blockbuster titles). No sense getting your fanboy-panties in a bunch guys.
just maybe spending 30 seconds thinking about the millions of people the world over who don't live in affluent 'consumer societies', might put it in a different perspective
By the way, Blu-Ray is offering prices cheaper than what DVD did at it's current lifespan, and Blu-Ray is BC w/ DVD so idk what you have against Blu-Ray. It's not like you had to jump on the bandwagon either; you could've waited just like me. I don't own either console. I just play my friends' and g/f's.
Make fanboy discussion BANNABLE I say!
All I'm trying to prove is that his statements are wrong. I'm not trying to prove anything better than the other, just that (again) his statements have no proof behind them other than opinion.
I think it's annoying because they miss the point entirely to go off on a rant about whatever they feel passionately about. There are pros and cons to each but this thread is a discussion about Microsoft pledging not to cancel any game it makes rather than Playstation vs Xbox.
And why are you bothering to take the time to do that? :|
i hope that was baiting.
this thread is completely subjective to ones opinion of his/her console, Grow up the lot of you.
I said install base, not release date, the wii has a large install base as well, the PS3 will have a larger install base eventually. as seen by it consistently outselling the 360 world wide, and even in North America. The 360 has a larger install base BECAUSE it had a year start, try and keep up.
Virtually everything you have said is totally wrong, how come if it si such a dissappointm, ent, it has outsold the 360 everywhere, and will overtake it in the next year? As for cost, several people ahve already pointed out the 360 is not cheaper then the PS3, and you actually get less for the money, thus the PS3 is outselling the 360, even in MS's home country. The 360 has been dogged by blowing the year head start, and rushing out bad hardware the likes no console has ever seen.
The only people dogging the PS3 are desperate 360 fanboys.
Everyone has one, that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, the 360 has not even reached 20 million world wide, the PS2 has hit 120 million, the next gen race has a LONg way to go. WOW. Even MS has stated the first console to 100 million wins the race, get real, the next gen rate is still small compared to last gen.
Also, no, if you read many of the other posts, the 360 IS NOt cheaper at all, there is already a $399 PS3 model that has way more for the money then the 360, plus you have to pay for live.
By 2009, all analyst expect the PS3 to surpass the 360.
If you believe it is cheaper, that only makes the fact that the PS3 sales keep getting better more of a boon for Sony. It outsold the 360 in NA alone by a considerable margin, worldwide it is even larger.
In the same time frame when the 360 started with no competition, the PS3 still outsold the 360.
Again see my earlier post x360 - £189. PS3 £299.
You can not compare the xbox to the ps2 its had a ten year run and is now free with cereal.
that is a load of crock, the PS3 will surpass the 360 by next year, what will your excuse by then? Just look at the history of consoles, when one comes out later and outsells the first console out, look what happens? The market is HUGE, and the next gen is only a small portion yet, the PS3 is gainign sales very month. I guess you should be an analyst then as all other analyst say the PS3 is going to surpass the 360. That is a BS excuse. First the 360 gamers were bragging about outselling the PS3, then it was software attachment, now they are coming up with more excuses. The sales will continue? yes, a a third place clip. The Ps3 is too strong in japan and the rest of the world, and even beating MS in its home country.
Everyone who wants one has one, lol, denail to the extreme.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/dfc-current-console-installed-base-to-exceed-last-gen-in-2011
The facts are the facts, the Ps3 is doing better then the 360, despite being a year later and the 360 having no competition for the first year.
Also you forget that now blu ray has "won" the ps3 is an excellent value player not every sale will be buying as a games console. With Christmas not that far off (in mum terms) a small drop for the 360 bring it to a very important psychological point <£150 at this point it makes the big Christmas present where as the PS3 is still a fair investment (hypothetically). In fact the 360 is already there but only in low end bundles now you or I know that this deal is a bit rubbish but little timmys mother who holds the cash might not see the difference bettween the too and that's very important .
The only metric that really matters at the end of the day is game purchase rate and at the moment i still say the 360 is ahead.
I own neither console and tbh couldn't care less which one wins, but watching people fight over who has the biggest game peen is quite entertaining
Umm, the PS3 has not dropped its price in ages, that has little to do with it, the price of is still more then the 360 and it still outsells it mroe and more ech month.. game purcahse rate is because of a larger insall base, common sense, and the head start means more games, The Ps3 is chaninging that as it catches up.
I am a PC gamer who could care less about either, but seeing the 360 gamer keep changing the excuses as the Ps3 gains steam is annoying.
Now, when Mirror's Edge gets released that may all change - but I've heard nothing about that being a PS3 exclusive so far. Given a multiformat title, I'll always buy the Xbox 360 version unless there's a very compelling reason not to - such as the X360 version being broken in important ways.
At the end of the day, it's personal preference. I prefer the Xbox 360's controller, I prefer the on-line service (and it's well worth the £40 a year you pay when you look at how polished it is compared to the free services on PS3 and Wii), and most of my friends are playing the Xbox 360 versions of games too - important when you want to join 'em for some multiplayer fun. That said, the PS3 is the more 'polished' console - it's a lot quieter when in use, and I like the XMB interface.
I'll tell you one thing that irritates me, though: when the PS3 was launched, I'm sure I remember Sony mocking Microsoft because the Xbox 360 was 720p only. Now, that's changed since then - the 360 can now do 720p/1080i via component and 1080p via HDMI, but my PS3 will only go up to 720p on both of the games I own. The XMB runs at 1080p, Blu-Ray runs at 1080p, but both games force down to 720p. Which, when you consider the Xbox 360 will output whatever the hell resolution you request and stick with it for everything except DVD playback, is pretty rubbish.
Thats hardware sales:
http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&start=39243&end=39607&weekly=1
If some one could point me to the "must have" games for each platform we could try and work out an approximate attachment rate which would be interesting from a slightly geeky pov.
NEITHER IS PERFECT, BOTH HAVE THEIR FANBASE. Drop it.
Exactly, there really are none.
As for the PSN, as I understand it there currently is no option for voice chat outside games - with the Xbox 360 I'm able to see that a friend is online, talk to him directly, agree on a game we both want to play, and then continue to talk to him while we load the game and enter the multiplayer lobby. I can then talk to him and everyone else while we play the game, and continue to talk to him after we get bored and load a different game. When I checked, this simply wasn't possible on the PSN, and resulted in several people I know having their Xbox 360s on with no game loaded in order to chat to friends while playing PS3 games - which is ridiculous.
I'm going on (amongst other things) a post to the uk.games.video.misc group in which a user states:
now youre talking about in-game? before you said out of a game
and as I said you can have 6-way video/voice chat.
in-game you can talk to people if the game allows you. it doesnt allow you to talk to people who arent in same room as you. its according to how game devs do it. and personally i think thats alot better. by being able to talk to anyone on your friends list at any time could result in major cheating.
another thing i find useless in XBL is the sending invites from a game to someone who is playing a different game. if im playing a game i dont want to be bothered by that. that would be annoying.
but whatever. ive got my ps3 and im happy and thats what counts.
I don't understand why that annoys you so much? Usually when it's doing that it's in the process of loading up a screen you've seen 100's of times anyways. That is the reason why I don't see your point of making it out to be a "flaw". It's not like it's doing it while in-game....
Gareth, I'm glad you own both consoles. That way you at least can say you've used both of them without saying something about either console, yet while having no experience of it whatsoever. Luckily for me, I'm able to enjoy all 3 consoles this generation at my g/f's house or at my friend's houses.
i must admit ive only played a 360 maybe once or twice for a very short time and in that time i played it crapped out on me like 4 times. lol. but it was at a store so i guess that is expected. :)
I admit it. I need help.
By what method are you able to cheat by talking to your friends?
If you mean in FPS games by telling them where other players are then I guess real world soldiers cheat when they radio enemy locations to each other. :p
If you don't want to be interrupted while playing a game either unplug the ethernet cable or go into your profile and select 'appear offline' or maybe there is another option if that still gets you annoying messages on screen.
Or if it is round based games with no respawn and your friend is dead and can look at other players could tell you where enemy is.
Though im not sure there is any game on 360 that would be like that and most shooters are respawn.
