Prince of Persia was one of the most talked about games in the build up to the Ubidays 2008 event, so it has been no surprise that Ubisoft wheeled out Producer Ben Mattes to talk about the game as soon as the event kicked off.

Speaking in an open Q&A about the game to Ubidays host Vernon Kay, Ben certainly didn't disappoint either and confirmed many rumours about the upcoming action-adventure.

Firstly, Ben was keen to emphasise that the new game has absolutely no relation to the last Sands of Time trilogy. Instead, this is a new prince, a new world and an entirely new game universe. Although the core ideals of the game – speed and acrobatics – remain, much of the slate has been wiped clean.

In fact, according to Ben, the new prince isn't even a real prince. At the start of the new game he's nothing but a simple adventurer and vagabond who embarks on a quest to save the world – one that'll end with him getting a crowning no doubt.

Ben went on to confirm that the time-rewinding mechanic of the old games would not be returning in the new game.

I worked on the original Sands of Time games and I'm enormously proud of what we did with it,” said Ben. “It was a hard decision for us to remove the idea, but I stand behind it 100 percent and we've come up with something better to replace it.

What Ben is talking about is the new female support character, Elika, who'll be aiding the Prince and the player throughout their quest.

Elika has been designed to help players with everything they do, said Ben before an exclusive trailer was shown to the audience. “Elika will help the prince navigate and solve puzzles. The Prince will even fight better just because she's there and we've designed her to be nothing but helpful to players. No getting stuck on scenery.

Ben, and the rest of Ubisoft, seemed quite taken with the idea of a female support – an expansion of the original trilogy's Farrah character no doubt. What do you think though? Let us know in the forums.
