Futuremark has announced the formation of the Futuremark Games Studio - it's going to start releasing games "Very soon".
Futuremark, the development studio behind the popular 3DMark and PCMark benchmark suites, has announced that it is to start developing games following the formation of the Futuremark Games Studio group.
The company has been developing benchmark programmes for ten years now and the company says that its 3DMark suite has become the world’s most popular benchmarking software.
Tero Sarkkinen, CEO of Futuremark Corporation, said that “Futuremark Games Studio is committed to developing original IP games with the highest quality game play combined with our established track record of creating blow-your-socks-off visuals.
During this period, many fans of the suite have wondered how long it would be before Futuremark would start making games. “Very soon they are going to get it – and then some!
” added Sarkkinen.
Futuremark says that the new studio’s mission is to build world class games “that bring new and entertaining game play to gamers.
” It also claimed that the games and their engines will deliver stellar performance—regardless of whether you’ve got a bleeding edge system, or something that’s a little more modest by today’s standards.
I’m not sure what to think of this announcement at the moment. In one respect, it’s good to see the guys at Futuremark putting their resources to use in making real games that we can play, but from another perspective, one has a certain level of scepticism – is this a cash in on the name it has created for itself in the benchmarking world?
