Intel wants to do hands-free consoles?

Intel reckons the future of consoles lies in motion-sensitive cameras, but we aren't so sure...

Intel is a company with an eye on the horizon and, having been burned by the current generation of consoles as Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony all decided to use IBM chips in their consoles, Intel is hoping to grow next generation.

Intel has reportedly approached some console makers to tout its new technology and chips. Most interesting of all though is where exactly Intel sees the market growing.

"We imagine some future generation of [Nintendo's] Wii won't have hand controllers. You just set up the cameras around the room and wave your hand like you're playing tennis." Said Justin Rattner, Intel's Chief Technology Officer.

Intel reckons that the new range of chips it has developed, which are capable of around 1 trillion calculations a second, would be ideally suited to use with motion-sensing cameras.

Personally, I'm not sure that motion-sensitive cameras would be a reliable or enjoyable input as the amount of interactions detectable by the camera may be somewhat limited.

I just can't see myself playing an FPS via a motion-sensitive camera basically - but what do I know, right? If you think differently then let us know in the forums.

intel wants it hand in yet another pie, what ever happened to the philosophy of do one thing and do it right

Could be interesting, but it (hands free) would require a significant amount of horsepower and a lot of luck. I don't think we'll losing controllers anytime soon. :)

and here we thought playing the Wii looked ridicules... hehe, imagine playing motion sensor, everyone would think your a kook... haha

The three of you are right.

But I ****ing LOVE INTEL. And when I mean Love, I mean, There may be, Just maybe, be a "Intel" sticker I put on my Girlfriends Face, every time we make sweet love.............Maybe.

Anyways, Yeah. I love intel and really wish I could see more Intel parts inside of more things.
And consoling would be great start for them.

Face it, We would have a LOT LESS X-box's burning out, if they used a Intel Processor.

You would have to learn to moon walk on the spot if you wanted to move forward on an FPS!!!

Personally, i think the mo-sensitive tech is so inmature today, still has a long way to go. The worst situation might be you standing in front your 1TFlops PC and a unpleasant motion-controlled game or sth. By experincing incorrect detection, stupid interpreting, strict demand on the image background... you may feel that cpu is wasted on this not-yet flourishing technology.
But surely this is a exicting idea, i'm dreaming to have that day.

you would need voice controls too, so in FPS games you can run around your living room shouting PCHAW PCHAW

ahh just like when we were 6

Intel needs competition. For example, they are already on their second-gen 80-core CPU architecture (from what I've heard) and w/ no competition, that reality won't be coming for a while until they find a reason to have to put it out. Basically what I'm saying is this: Intel doesn't need any more of our money, especially if another (non-monopolistic) company can provide the same.

o yeah, let's not put any blame on MS's horrid thermal design shall we. How many PS3's do you see burning up?

I loved the motion sensors in that cop arcade light gun game where you had to physically duck to duck behind cover etc, good fun. Not seen that arcade in years though. Aint sonys eye toy have motion sensor games?

what if you have a small room, how will you be able to run in the game??? run into walls

I doubt it, setting up cameras would be too complicated.

The concept and theory are great, its just the execution that would worry me. Would you have to physically squat down pretending like your driving to get the thing to work?

But the thought of four DLP projectors in a room with me in it does sound rather enticing.

Yes. its good fun but rather gimmicky, and there aren't many games for it. Before I got my PC, it was fun having some friends round and waving your arms around... but that has been completely demolished by the Wii, which is similarly fun but much better (games and gameplay)

When are they going to understand we dont/cant do an aerobic workout for 5 hours ... aside from helping less able people play games with much more subtle movements than that of the wii I cant see this sort of control taking off... for exmaple proper gamers who want to spend more than 20 minutes playing a game arent going to want to be jumping around like a tool.

Things only get better when people try them. If someone like Intel doesn't begin investing in this sort of tech at some point it will never happen.

Intel is thinking pretty far ahead it seems and is already pitching ideas and technology to Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo for the next generation of consoles.

Ok I see an advantage for this kind of technology for consoles, it could make companies lose money though doing it this way.

Instead of some Wii Mote inserted into a gun, you could just buy the gun I guess, tilt it sideways to reload, might have 5 buttons inside, but the majority of the mechanics I guess is in the camera.

Would be cheaper etc.

Anybody try playing Totemball on XBL? Tryng to get a room setup properly in order to use the camera to control the game is annoying, Think I'd prefer to stick to either a proper joypad or the wiimote.
Quote geekboyUK 17th December 2007, 09:30
Intel have been playing about with computer vision for years now... I'm wondering whether this is going to be a lot more advanced than the eye-toy type stuff we've seen before.
Quote wolff000 17th December 2007, 16:22
Motion sensing would be great but it doesn't seem doable for all games. You would have to have some other input, voice maybe. Even then some games just don't seem to translate to that sort of thing. I look forward to seeing where this goes.

what we really need is brainwave controls ;)
