EverQuest: The Movie still in production

The EverQuest movie is to be written by the man behind 300. The movie, not the comic.

Games and movies are an odd thing. In theory, they should be quite close to each other and translation from one format to another should be relatively painless and easy. In reality, film-makers rarely play games and woefully misunderstand the medium, churning out god-awful pieces of drivel like the second Resident Evil movie or anything by Uwe Boll.

That doesn't stop movies of games being made though and the latest in the list of games to be savaged by the churning wheels of Hollywood is EverQuest.

Sony has just announced to Variety Online that it has signed Michael B. Gordon, writer of 300 to the film. Don't get too excited by that link though - remember that 300 was practically already in Frank Miller's awesome comic book.

Also signed up to be part of the project is Avi Arad who has taken the role of Producer. Avi has a mixed history as a producer and has worked on everything from Spider-Man 3 to The Bratz Movie - so it could go either way.

There's no plot details or release date announced, but we do know that the film will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, if that makes any difference to you at all.

Will you be popping along to see the movie if it ever gets released or is EverQuest a bit last millennium for your tastes? Let us know in the forums.

Hmmm, not sure about an Everquest game. I mean, what's the story of Everquest?
Just hope it doesn't end up like this

Resident Evil was a good example of a game turned movie (even if the movie storyline didn't match with game's).....

I hope when it comes to DVD they have a Joke Subtitle set you can select like they did for the first IT Crowd Episode that was so funny!

"Start CH Rot on MT1 now!"
"Preist 1 your turn"
"Omg Wiz Over Aggro"
"Ranger WS Pate!"

All credit to the movie industry that they are trying to build bridges with the games industry. A bit risky taking on Everquest as a film. Afterall we already have the mighty Lord Of The rings, which people will bound to use as a reference. Let's hope it doesn't end up like Dungeons & Dragons.:)

Oh, god, please no.... I actually felt my IQ slip a few notches from watching it, and I didn't even finish it.

D&D1 the film should be erased from the records as ever having existed.

Dungeons & Dragons 2 was a hilarious film.

I was screaming at the Tellybox

"no no you idiots don't let the cleric tank the dragon" he then got eaten or frozen cant remember.

It's difficult to be subjective sometimes with fantasy films after having played so many RPGs. I remember seeing Eragon and thinking to myself, there's no way that kid could have levelled up that fast to be able to take on an end of movie Boss. Hacks TBH.

lol rofl lol...

DnD2 was hilariously meh. I liked it focused more around the group accompishing things. Cleric tank teh dragon - that was lol.

But tbh most vids turned movie have been meh. Worth a watch, but not like OMG OMG OMG r0xx0r. I thought that the first Resident Evil was good, and if they ever make a Half-Life movie, count me in =).
