Fallout 3 isn't funny

The Fallout series always had a great sense of humour, but that may change with Fallout 3.

The Fallout games have always been laced with easter eggs and in-jokes. Whether it's randomly finding the Guardian of Forever in the middle of the desert, or asking the cook at a post-apocalypse cafe if she has anything with a 'little less rat in it', one thing Fallout was always good for was giving a lot of chuckle amid the violence.

Well, not anymore.

Bethesda recently bought the rights to the Fallout 3 singleplayer game (but not the MMO rights) and wants to make it clear that Fallout 3 is not a laughing matter. It's an adult game, for adults with a mature sense of humour.

"There are some people who say that making an 18-rated game, and especially making a Fallout one, should be about sleeping with the hooker, then waking up with the venereal disease. A lot of that stuff personally, to me, veers into being a 12-year old dungeon master. Some of it feels right and some of it feels wrong. We're appealing to an adult audience and it's a tough call. I mean, once you have groin shots you're approaching a level of silliness that, if you're not careful, can pervade the whole game." Lead designer, Emil Pagliarulo told Kotaku.

Ok, so shooting somebody in the groin is ok, but fart jokes aren't allowed? Sure, fine, whatever - just hurry up and make Fallout 3 dammit!

We still reckon there'll be a degree of humour creeping into the game, which is set for release in Q4 2008 on PC, PS3 and 360, and if anything then it's good to know that Fallout 3 is being taken seriously.

This doesn't sound like polictics at all. It just wreaks of it.

I'd hazard a guess and suggest that they're trying to avoid the same fallout (arf) that plagued Manhunt 2, when it was released.

Sorry, but I read an interview with the designer that said one of the important aspects of fallout would be finding water to drink, and that would include drinking from a toilet, which mght not be funny in itself, but if you're going to let the character drink from the bog, you have to let him shoot his enemies in the nuts. There is no free will with constraints.

You know, shooting someone in the nuts is quite sound tactically speaking if you target can somehow survive multiple shots to the head which they do in fallout. Firstly, it'll hurt a lot, secondly the groin is quite an important part for walking, and lastly, theres a major blood vessel there. I'm not sure what the big deal people are making of the groin shots.

Seems Beth are gonna take all the jokes out of the game, first they were complaining about the fourth wall comedy of the second game, and now it seems they want to cut out all the humour, fans of the series my ass.

this is basically just going to end up being like Oblivion with a Fallout setting. Oblivion, aside from the "openess" of it had a canned story that was pretty repetitive. Fallout is supposed to be satirical like Catch-22 and Rosencrantz&Guildenstern. This is going to be **** if they follow this, it'll be like Uwe Boll making his own version of LOTR.

I never played the originals, but i'm a big Oblivion fan, so seeing Oblivion in a fallout setting seems like a great idea to me :)

For too many Fallout fans though "Oblivion with guns" wouldn't do the series justice at all. It would be like, say, Nintendo making TESV using Mario Galaxy as a base.

I'm relatively new to Fallout, not sure how it slipped under my radar for so long, but I've really come to love the game, it's a classic, definitely worth checking out, like a lot of RPGs it takes a while to get to grips with the system behind it, but it's one of the best RPGs ever to be made.

Edited the first sentence to it actually makes sense.

Oh noooooo ... i'm a huge fan of fallout :/ if new 3rd ne will be as U say i will be veeeryyy unhappy :/. I loved funny encounters, jokes from monthy python and all hidden usless things that U can find :D like magic 8th ball or easter egg. Damnn !!
