Soldier of Fortune: Payback is the third title in the massively gory series from Activision.
The rumours have been circulating around among fans of uber-violent first-person shooters for a few days now, and Activision has finally decided to say something about them this morning. Namely, Activision has confirmed that a new
Soldier of Fortune game is in development.
The game will be a sequel to 2002's
Soldier of Fortune: Double Helix and will run with the subtitle,
Payback.
Activision confirmed the rumours with a short and simple quote for
Kotaku, saying;
"Soldier of Fortune: Pay Back is being published by Activision's Minneapolis office. We have no further information to share at this point, but hope to very soon."
The game is rumoured, via insider information, to be in a roughly playable state already and is planned to incorporate up to thirty-six separation points on each model. Or, in simpler terms; Gibs, HO!
Activision also hopes to incorporate destructible environments into the game at some stage.
One things for sure, given how gory the last
Soldier of Fortune game was (described by one member of
bit-tech staff as
'Just awfully brutal'), it will be interesting to see how it copes with ratings from the BBFC and ESRB considering the recent
troubles which the gory Manhunt 2 went through.
Ever play the original games and, if so, what'd you reckon to them? Are there too many violent games out now? Why can't we all just get along? Put your answers on a postcard and address them to
bit-tech's forums.
Hopefully this one will be all right but In all fairness I probably won't buy it anyway.
Didnt like SOF 2 and didnt really play it past the fist like level. Hope this one is good.
I like the fact that it has a good sense of realism, if you can call it that. Now, provided they work just as hard on the environments, gameplay and story, it could turn out to be a really entertaining title, considering the current state of graphic and physics capabilities.
Hope it has improved goul engine. :D
Great fun going around playing as a shotgun surgen. :)
SOF1 was fantastic, i remember running around with godmode on just so i could blow limbs off everyone undisturbed :D
sof2 wasnt as good but was still fun
great games :D
HERE HERE!!!!!!
The first 2 games where awsome, the ability to shoot a guy in the foot and watch him dance about, or shot him in the arm so he would drop his model, and these where just some of the things you could do. Goul eneinge we love you!!!
TBH, i look foward to this game more than Crysis!!
both 1 and 2 are good i think. had lotsa fun with double-helix with blasting people in the most...unusual ways...:p
36 separation points??? wooo more experiments!! :D
i agree, manhunt is not the same category. gore level might b the same, but SoF is more fun then just gory...
(guess ill install sof2 again :) )
Great news.
no way.
It would appear thats the case :'( weep!!!
I read the following article and it NOT what I was hoping, I sure do hope that some good modder out there can rectify any damage caused by it not being raven developed!

Watered down FTL :'(
hmm.. I do hope they keep the old graphics engine and just spruce it up abit if there going to do it budget as the graphics were pretty functional and it would leave more money for gameplay/multiplayer.
Blasphemy. Utter blasphemy...
We are a bit skeptical about a 3rd version. Hope it does the series justice.
