Guitar Hero 3 confirmed, Songs named

"For those about to rock" - Guitar Hero III is coming, along with wireless axes and all new songs.

If you haven't had a chance to plug in and play Guitar Hero or its awesome sequel yet, you're missing out. But if you don't want to buy an older game and wired axes, you just might be in luck. Activision has officially announced Guitar Hero III this week, along with wireless controllers.

Now, a second sequel to one of the most talked-about games in recent history is no surprise. It would be silly to sit idle and let the franchise vanish, at least while there's still plenty of money to be made on it. In fact, the original word that there would be a third in the series (which would also see the Wii) came from an earnings call a while back. So we won't talk too long over the fact that there is one, and instead skip to the interesting meat - part of the song list.
  • "Cult of Personality" - by Living Colour
  • "Paint it Black" - by The Rolling Stones
  • "Cherub Rock" - by The Smashing Pumpkins
  • "Sabotage" - by the Beastie Boys
  • "The Metal" - by Tenacious D
  • "My Name Is Jonas" - by Weezer
  • "Knights of Cydonia" - by Muse
There will also be a few new covers coming, including songs originally done by Kiss and Alice Cooper. It definitely sounds like Activision is starting to get some serious weight behind the franchise, particularly to get bands that are known for their own self-obsession such as Smashing Pumpkins onto the bill.

Of course, for many of us, the news isn't so much in the sequel as it is in what you can use to play the sequel - Activision has announced that it will be releasing several wireless guitar models to suit your feelings of on-stage freedom. Two models have been named so far - the Gibson Les Paul (for the XBox 360, Wii, and PS3) and the Gibson Kramer (not to be confused with the Seinfeld character, and only on the PS2).

So there you have it. There's still no official release date on either the controllers or the next version of the game, but we'll let you know as soon as we hear something. Until then, rock on in our forums!

Awesome stuff, can't wait to get stuck into the Wii version. I'll have to get a PS2 copy as well, the Kramer sounds like a very attractive proposition.

What's the X360 version that's out now like? I've heard rumours from mates that there are extra, downloadable songs and stuff (although it could be a load of crap). :p

link takes you to main forums page instead of this thread.

There's been a wireless version of the guitar for the PS2 for a while now (I bought mine in HMV over a month ago - I just wish the PS2 version had a USB plug so it could be used on either PS2 or 360 :()

i thought they left it on a wire because that's what a real guitar is like ....

Well you can, quite easily, get wireless modules for guitars. They're useful for live shows.

They left a wire on because it's cheaper - with a wired one you don't always have to keep feeding it AA batteries.

I was just thinking the other day that GH needed to have sabotage. That song is so awesome. It would be even better if they had the music video playing while you played, one of the best music videos ever. Smashing pumpkins is a good addition too, although I wouldn't have picked that song. Some Pearl Jam and Staind would also be nice.

Personally I think GH needs more 'extreme' guitar based songs, too many of the additions seem quite straight forward: they have dozens of quite hard songs, and few super difficult ones to really test the pros at the game.

And by 'extreme', I mean something akin to this hack:

Lol, that looks harder than playing the song on a real guitar

I think Activision will be making a huge mistake if they don't include a song by Dio. The stuff is classic. Anyways, I shall be looking forward to it as usual.

About the 360 vers. Yes it does have new songs, about 1 per section. Not totally sure about the DLable songs tho, havn't tried.
